Terrible news about the journalists who died, but the whole affair has got me thinking.

Prior to the untimely deaths of the two western journalists there seemed to be very little political pressure applied to the Syrian authorities, now that two western journalists have been killed there's an outcry and presidents and leaders are scrambling over themselves to denounce the atrocities...

all the while the poor buggers getting bombed are thinking...why us & why can international intervention happen in Egypt, but not Syria.

I know it's all about politics, but sometimes bloody politics get right in the way of being decent humans...

If we cared about people we would have swamped Zimbabwe instead of leaving it to rot in misery for the locals.

You're right, just compared with other oil states exports and it's a drop in the ocean

With the greatest respect, $3.2bn is nothing.
Hell I personally know a chap with more than double that amount.

Hello, I'm new here. You know what they say: "Never Talk Religion Or Politics" but hell I can't resist

quote:

According to the International Monetary Fund, oil sales for 2010 were projected to generate $3.2 billion for the Syrian government and account for 25.1% of the state's revenue.

so they do produce and export Oil.

According to the US:

quote:

Libya was "a unique situation," Carney told reporters Monday. "We had large portions of the country that were out of the control of Moammar Gadhafi (and) we had an international consensus to act. We had the support of the Arab League to act in a multilateral fashion."

Personally I think that we (the UK) and the US had an axe to grind over the Lockerbie bombing and the fact that Ghadafi was very vocal in his condemnation of our two nations over a long period of time.

A few weeks ago, Jeremey Bowen was invited into the BBC Breakfast studio to talk about the Syria situation. He started to talk passionately about the violence and the lock-down by the authorities. The situation sounded terrible. Jeremy managed around 30 seconds before he was interrupted by one of the anchors who took us live, to a church, which the queen was exiting. There was really nothing to see apart from an old lady walking out of a church. By the time the live link was handed back to the studio, Jeremy's time was up and he'd left. What a complete waste of time. To swap Jeremey's important piece for the queen was inexcusable.

Simple economics, really. The West can't afford another intervention. Particularly with Iran taking advantage of the situation and sabre rattling. Washington & London must be cacking their pants that Israel doesn't kick off.
