Somebody explain.............operatic guy has voice to die for-nobody turns round. Girl duo...pitching all over the place -all four turn round. Are we supposed to respect the judges credibility? Esp Tom Jones who I would have thought had impecable credentials.
I'm not watching this again, it smells of deceit and ulterior motives.

Hi All,

I watched The Voice for the first time last week & again on Saturday just gone, & the higher expectations I had for it have evaporated.
It's being considered as more "serious" than X Factor or Britain's Got Talent but in reality the only seriousness on show appears to be that there are no mentally ill or seriously deluded singers on show for the audience to mock. The juudges talk about finding new, fresh, original Voices but the reality is that the people getting picked will have a touch of Adele/Amy Winehouse if they're women, smooth swoony qualities if they're men, or generic pop/R 'n' B/Gospel for both sexes.
The revolving chairs aren't serving any purpose. The singers that I've seen rejected include a lovely but bland single mother of 2 who sung (I think) a 70's or 80's ballad, a bare chested long haired rocker who belted out a great Bon Jovi Living On Prayer, a small cheeky chappie who did a good karaoke "Dock Of The Bay", & the large guy with the operatic style voice who blasted out a Tom Jones style of song. So effectively you could pretty much guess what they all looked like by their song choices AND be pretty sure that these styles of song won't support a career or hit record at this moment in time. This is why pitchy little girls & vocally athletic R 'n' B are getting through at the expense of "better" singers. They will sell product.
If the previously mentioned contestants wanted to exploit the format to win a contest in which they'd normally not get past the first round they needed to get smart & choose uptempo chart songs & R 'n' B, launch their histrionics towards the end, then laugh at the looks on William & Jessie's faces when they turned to see the "wrong person" standing there onstage. Likewise the makers of the show should have gone for as many Britain's Got Talent moments as possible & enrolled people with great Pop voices but with very "ordinary" images a la Susan Boyle. Now seeing 4 judges turn around then try to be polite while simultaneously trying to hand contestants off on each other would be turning the mockery tables away from the contestants & on to them for a change. I would enjoy this.

Next week's format is pairs of singers going head to head singing a song competitively against each other as opposed to collaboratively with each other, so The Voice has pretty quickly turned to the Reality TV type of being the it's-all-about-me-baying-mob-studio-audience show that we've all grown used to seeing on a Saturday night. No doubt the singers who like to employ 17 notes when 1 will do will emerge triumphant, & I'll get a bad head. Assuming I watch. Which I will for at least a short period to prove myself right.

Cheerio,
Mark W.

He had a great voice but sounded like a show singer, which is what he is. Clearly that's not what they are looking for. A week or so ago a female show singer also didn't get picked despite having a great voice.

So far the show has been interesting but I am not sure how they will handle the next elimination rounds. Sounds like its going to get very gimmicky.

He is a "show" singer he played God in Jerry Springer the Opera if I remember correctly.
It begins to look to me as if this show is being used to publicise acts with existing careers, or to revive flagging careers of failing performers, and that the rest of the "lesser" acts are being taken on on as padding,!!!
I, would have thought Tom jones would have more respect for the business, or am I being unneccesarily cynical.??

Like all of these TV shows there is definitely an agenda. That whole business of Will.i.am, "following his gut" in waiting for the last contestant who just turned out to be a great singer was far to good to have been pure chance.

So far I have enjoyed the show but lets see how the deal with the next phase once the gimmick of the chairs has gone.

We all have different tastes, but I don't think the judges always make the right choices. Is there a hidden agenda and each judge has two or three favourites and the rest just bulk out the numbers? All the artists were pretty good, far better than X Factor and the different format will keep me interested for the time being.

Style over substance, which is exactly how the world of pop works. The show is designed to find another pop star. I ve found it fascinating and watched it religiously but the end result will not differ from the X factor pap foisted on us each Christmas.

If anything is going to force me to turn off it would be Jessie J who I find totally irritating.
