Posted - 22/05/2012 : 07:54:37 Depends on the gig, the size of the venue and how lazy I'm feeling. 2-up, 2-down å la Gadd (i.e. floating floor toms) is currently my preferred set-up, especially for function gigs. Sometimes 1-up, 2-down and 1-up, 1-down if I'm providing drums for jam nights, and sometimes 2-up stand-mounted and 2-down when I want the ride somewhere where I actually like it, which is over the bass drum. But if I do that, then my hi-hat position usually gets compromised. In fact, I dunno how I want to set them up most of the time. After selling my Gibraltar rack last year, I'm now wondering whether I want one again so I can go for the full Gavin Harrison-style 3-up, 2-down and have done with. |

Ah yes, the implicit presumption that you're right and everyone else is wrong.
Yes, I always think I'm right and everyone else is wrong.......that includes you in the case of your statement above, haha!
Get a room, you two... |

Posted - 20/05/2012 : 09:37:45 Either one up one down or two up one down. I too like the ride over my BD so a two up has the high tom at 11 o'clock, mid at 12 and ride at 1. I don't really like two down unless the second tom is on the hi hat side. |

Posted - 20/05/2012 : 09:19:42 My default set up is 1 up 2 down, but when space, mic channels or laziness on my part use 1 up 1 down. Rarely use 2 up 2 down these days, Have got used to having the ride over the bass drum. Also I have just started mounting my 12" tom on a snare stand and love it. I'm amazed I never tried it before! |

Posted - 20/05/2012 : 01:26:51 1 up , 2 down.
I do occasionally play with 2 toms over the Bass drum but the fact that I have to choose which of the two to hit during a fill seems a waste of time to me now......one 12x8 tom is plenty to worry about in front of me

Posted - 19/05/2012 : 17:15:47 Prog.. I mean 10" and 12" rack toms and 14" and 16" floors. Mrs G found American hilarious as we live on the edge of the Black Country. I was in a hurry. |

I could be interested in a one up two down but doubt I'd ever be bothered to gig it!

Sometimes 12(snare stand) up and 14 x 16 down or 13 up (snare stand)and 16 down (old skool)
Used to use all five and if I'm honest five is my preferred option but due to space and set up probs I gave up, although now I think I'd like an 8" over the hat but finding an 8" Tama Starclassic Performer in green is nigh on impossible. If anyone knows..........?
I have a pathological aversion to two rack one floor esp if the racks are mounted on the kick. (something to do with school and rehearsal room kits)
Playing with no toms live is a concept too boring to even contemplate, I suppose we're all different.

Posted - 17/05/2012 : 01:50:05 I am, at heart, a "more is more" person, I think ! I have 5 mounted toms and 2 floor toms to choose from, as well as a set of 3 Roto-toms, but my preferred set-up is probably 3 up, 2 down.
All the usual caveats and qualifications about nature of the gig, available space on stage, how I'm feeling, time of the month, etc., etc., should be taken as read ! |

This is by far the best setup I found |

Posted - 16/05/2012 : 17:47:13 Last week I was playing 8+10 up, 14 and 16 down, this week I'm mostly playing 10 up 14 down and with 2 less cymbals.
It changes with the weather. |

Posted - 15/05/2012 : 20:35:48 1 up 1 down - would like to try 1 up 2 down at some point but I suspect that I would quickly abandon that.
I started 1up/1 down then went to 4 up 2 down...but quickly striped it back to 1 up 1 down. |

1 up 1 down for indi.
none up 1 down is my default. last gig no toms at all, just kick snare hats and crashride. |

Posted - 15/05/2012 : 11:52:10 Depends how much I can get in the car and on the stage, but I'm currently enjoying 3 up 1 down. The 16" floor tom doesn't get used much so its often not worth carting about. |

Posted - 15/05/2012 : 11:39:28 Seems like the majority are going for 1 up...
I prefer 2 up (10+12) and 1 down (16), although I've got a 13 I sometimes put between them to make 3 up 1 down. I found when I first used the extra tom it opened me up a bit to some more interesting fills which I hadn't really tried before. After using it for a while, the ideas were still coming when I removed the extra one, so I'm back to 2 up 1 down now. |

Posted - 15/05/2012 : 10:58:06 Hi All,
One or two up, one down. I find it difficult to use two down, the larger tom ends up not getting used. Mixing it up with either one or two up can keep me fresh as I adapt fills from one set up to the other. I like the ride over the bass drum, however with years of playing it over my floor Tom I'm happy with that set up too. Cheerio Mark W |
