Haha! I just saw this Yard... Well, let's just say I've been very fortunate, just like yourself... And as you know, when you get to know them personally, you realize for the most part they're just regular guys... you get beyond seeing them as larger than life... except for Ringo and Charlie. I'm always on my best behavior around them!
I've seen Steve White mentioned here a few times and I concur that besides being one of the greatest drummers on the planet, you won't find a more humble, sincere and giving person. Just a great guy in every way.
welcome John
Thanks Mike. A pleasure to be here
For those on here that dont know who John Dechristopher is check out this interview we did a few years back, now he has met a few drummers!! http://www.mikedolbear.com/story.asp?StoryID=2498&Source=Search&txtSearch=john|dechristopher
Thanks again Mike. I'll be talking about some of the guys in my blog... |

Posted - 06/03/2013 : 11:25:09 Quite a few through my previous work... Kenny Clare and Pete York in nightmare private audition scenario (see previous posts...) - but the most striking was Vinni Colaiuta: I happened to be at the counter at the Shepherd's Bush Hilto next to him checking in - when he told the clerk his name I said hello and we had a brief chat and exchanged numbers (I was working for a record company at the time. He said he was over for an audition (!). He'd paid his own way over to do this (double !). He called a day or so later, brought in his wife's demo for me to listen to. I wasn't in A&R, but agreed to... and then had to call him and tell him it was a no-no (his wife was an absolutely gorgeous ex-Playboy model, but couldn't sing). He received this news with remarkable equanimity, and later called again to tell me he'd got the job (no surprise there) and to invite me to come and watch a rehearsal - with Sting. I was tied up at work and couldn't go. ********, ********, ********. |

Posted - 02/03/2013 : 23:55:05 Thanks to the Freddie Gee drum academy I have been very lucky in this respect: Steve White and Gregg Bissonette are two fantastic blokes. I was really lucky the first year I went to be on Steve and Gregg's pub quiz team : A heap of giggles all night. Stanton Moore and James Hester - Manchester clinic, a bunch of dolbearians went for a curry with Mr Moore after ( I am ashamed I can't remember all the attendees names) Neal Wilkinson, - what a gent and a funny bloke. Steve Barney- A 1980 Genesis gig was the first gig for both of us. Andy Gangadeen. Quiet but funny. Mark Mondesir. a bloody genius Gary Husband - both at Drum Academy and I bought a kit from him a few years ago - the best bargain ever too. Ricky Lawson- seemed like a decent chap. Steve Washington was my drum teacher for a while, I think he was having a bad patch at the time. Chad Smith chatted up my girlfriend at a clinic once... Of course the mighty Mike Dolbear:-) Former YDOTY James Burt: what a player and a fantastic lad too. Ian Paice - clinic autograph time Dave Mattacks and Mickey Barker - more clinic times :-) Both splendid chaps.
Oh and Lloyd Ryan. The only drummer that has left me unimpressed with his interpersonal skills.

I met Dennis Chambers after a clinic and got his autograph on a fag packet. Also 'had a drink' with Chad Smith and his crew - I say had a drink, I just sat there giggling like a small child and couldn't think of anything cool to say, so basically kept stum. In hindsight etc etc... |

Also met Chester Thompson at the NEC hotel where the band (Genesis) were staying (my mate Mike Kidson was PC's drum tech). Met Jimmy Carl Black at a Muffin men gig in Morecambe. Met Billy Cobham at a gig in Barrow-in-Furness. Met John Marshall at a clinic in Barrow-in-Furness sometime in the late seventies. Met Gary Wallis at a gig in the Town & Country Club my pal was playing at. There's probably others too but nearly 40 years gigging plays with yer memory... :-) |

Posted - 16/08/2012 : 23:16:24 Met Benny Greb after a clinic, he's a Cool guy Ran into Thomas Lang twice before both of his clinics. Chatted for a while he's a really nice guy. Dave Weckl blanked me when I said hello to him but he might not have heard me shout at him. Steve Gadd signed autographs for me and a couple of others after a show even though he was running late for a plane. He's a really nice guy. Keith Carlock jumped off the front of the stage during the break at a rudder show. And signed stuff and gave away some sticks. That was really cool.
Rex Hardy jnr hung around for ages too after his last clinic and didn't rush anyone when signing autographs etc. He came across as a genuinely nice guy.
To be honest I've never gone to a clinic and came home unhappy. Virgil donati, terry Bozzio Chris Armstrong, Bryan Downey All seemed like nice guys too.

Posted - 16/08/2012 : 16:20:41 I shared a urinal a few years ago with the drummer who played in the Harry Stoneham Trio on the Parkinson Show back in the 1970's. It was at the launch of the Ford Orion at the NEC back in 1982. Don't know his name but we had a good chat about corporate gigs and he was really pleasant. I also had a chat with Mike Smith (Syd Lawrence Orchestra/Sessions etc) about his crash and ride cymbals while having a pee at the Spa Centre, Leamington a few years ago. I've had some really good conversations in public toilets! |

Posted - 16/08/2012 : 12:44:09 Most of the famous drummers I would have met were at the PASIC conventions I was at from 2000-2006.
Billy Ward – True gent, many funny stories and laughs, especially at DrummerLive with Simon D, Jeff (from Billy’s Forum) and Bernhard of Drummerworld.com Mike Snyder – Roland US Demo guy, great friend Craig Blundell - Time for everyone and always full of enthusiasm Bob Knight – Met up, right before his gig, at the Olympia, Dublin Roy Wooten (of the Flecktones) – My inspiration on Zendrum, remembers me even if we haven’t seen each other in years. Johnny Rabb – Always positive Liam Bradley (Van Morrison, Mary Black) – Fabulous drummer (and Vocalist)
Other funny moments, include Demoing a Zendrum to Narada Michael Walden (when he says play, you do!!) Showing Omar Hakim how to play Bodhran
Plus meeting up with loads of MD Forum members, Mully, DWP, Keith the Beat,Flurbs, Tony B, Gary Noonan,Mike Ellis, Mike and Gerry etc.

Roger Taylor Early 90's backstage, told him what a huge influence he was, that I wore out "Live Killers" cassette as a kid.
Dave Weckl in the 80's bumped into him in the street in Soho after an AMAZiNG "electric band" gig at Ronnie Scotts. Had a brief chat - he had a lady on his arm to attend to.
Ricky Lawson early 90's backstage in catering on a third consecutive day .. He told me he had 2 spare tickets for the show, I was like yes please thanks, he said that will be £100 please, oh. |

Posted - 28/07/2012 : 17:40:04 Loads... But a few highlights:-
Dom Famularo, At Clinics, masterclass and a private lesson. What you see is what you get!
Jim Chapin. At the age of 75, he'd driven from Birmingham where he was doing something at a private school to nottingham, to see his friend Dom Famularo do a clinic. He played some stuff in the clinic, and afterwards, He was demonstrating some Moellar stuff on a pad, (This was before Moellar became famous this side of the pond.) It finished up, after the club closed, with maybe a dozen of us, under a streetlamp in the car park. Dom was there, Jim was demonstrating, and I was holding his practice pad while he played. I was knocked out. A straight line from the American Civil war, Via Moellar, Via Chapin to me!
Buddy Rich. Met him very briefly a few times getting the program signed after gigs. Last one in Nottingham just after his second big heart attack, when the doctors had told him he would never, ever, play again. So 6 weeks later he opened in Ronnie Scotts, and 2 weeks after that he was in Nottingham. He played full on for 2 hours, "Sweatin and Bleedin," as they say. Afterwards, Queuing at the stage door for an autograph, it was a hot July night, we were in shorts and Tee shirts. Buddy was sat there in an overcoat, scarf and hat. Obviously really unwell. Just before it was my turn, some guy came up and aid, "Mr Rich, we gotta go now." Buddy said, "No, these people pay my wages, and they pay your wages, if they want an autograph, I stay till they all get a autograph."
Jerry Brown. Saw him play with George Benson at the NEC. Afterwards, trying to get a good look at his kit, asked a roadie if I could get to meet him. Roadie went off, 2 minutes later, called me and the wife through to backstage, It was Jerry's Birthday. The band were there, I got to have some of his Birthday cake! To this day, can't remember what I asked him or what we talked about, just remember having no Idea what to say.
Eric Delaney. Met him several times when I was playing holiday camps. Last time I met him, I recognised him in the audience of a magic show in Blackpool. We chatted, I asked him if he was still playing. "No, I've retired now....well... Glenn Miller Orchestra are over here at the moment, and I'm guesting with them 4 or 5 nights a week. Oh and in a couple of weeks, I'm in the pit at the Covent Garden Opera. The show they're doing has a really weird part, I played it back in the 50's, and they're struggling to find someone to play it now, so I'm going down to help them out." All that at 84 years old. Amazing guy, I cried when I heard he'd gone. More from shock I think than anything. Couldn't believe it, thought he would last for ever.
Andy McGlasson, (No9 in the West End Drummers series on here.) What a great guy, won't go into details, but he did something really WAY above and beyond the call of duty for me.
Peter Ray Biggin. Still got the video of him as the other performer at a Dom Famularo clinic. He was about 12 at the time. ("I've got underwear older than him!"-Dom.)Got to know him more later.
Many many more met briefly at gigs, clinics etc.
Steve White at a clinic. Thanked me afterwards for asking a couple of good questions. (You're welcome Steve. Gimme a shout next time you're coming to Mallorca, I'll take you to some proper Tapas places.)
Dave Weckl. At Ronnie Scotts. As we passed, him looking mean and moody, I complimented him on his playing and the band. He stopped, smiled, face lit up, we chatted for maybe 5 minutes. Polite, friendly, completely different persona to what I expected.
Kenny Clare, Duncan Kinell, Rod Morganstein, ("What size sticks do you use?" ) Clem Cattini, John Hiseman.
Finally, Dino Dukes. Not massively famous, now playing with Paul Carrack. He was the catalyst that started me playing drums.
Bottom line. I can honestly say I've NEVER met a top drummer who wasn't down to earth, approachable and friendly.
Andy

Posted - 23/07/2012 : 20:37:22 Steve Gadd is a regular person with a New York/Italian accent. I showed him a cd compliation of some work he did with Chick Corea and asked him if he remembered any of it. He said yes and then asked me what my name was again. We were looking at the tracks and he autographed the cd. We started to talk about it before the attendants said there were more people who wanted to meet him. We shook hands and I bowed out after a few photos were taken. |

Posted - 23/07/2012 : 18:13:49 Mike Portnoy - met him on their Images & Words tour donkey's years ago. Lovely bloke. Lars Ulrich - no comment Nick Menza - colossal enthusiasm for drums, couldn't stop tapping his feet. Chad Smith - barking Bernard Purdie - total gentleman Noel Eccles - top chap, wouldn't stop talking and wouldn't let me pay for any of the drinks Steve Taylor - one of my instructors at MI and phenomenal all-round drummer and exponent of traditional grip technique. Now does his Buddy Rich tribute band which is phenomenal. Steve & Alan White - both utter gentlemen Dom Famularo - don't think I've ever, ever met someone so in to drums like him Greg Bissonette - another top chap who wasn't offended when I offered to cut both his legs off to give the rest of us a chance
These two aren't technically drummers in the accepted sense, but warrant a mention: Bob Zildjian - real larger-than-life character. Don't ever call him 'Mr Zildjian' though. He's 'Mr Sabian'. Vic Firth - another fun character
Very jealous of those of you who've met Stanton Moore.

My first ever in person lesson with a professional drummer. I'm kacking it.
I've never met Ged but have used his gear - we record all our stuff with Mark Jones in Oswaldtwistle. He works and writes with Ged a lot and was in Big Dog with him. I know he's toured with him doing sound for Peter Gabriel amongst other things.

Posted - 20/07/2012 : 22:45:56 Craig Blundell.
He put an offer out on facebook that he had some time available for one to one lessons on a first come first served basis. I sent him a message without expecting a reply as i expected he would be deluged. To my amazement he personally replied to me and offered me a slot. I made sure i could take th time off work and accepted it.
I rolled up on his drive at his house in Surrey after the 3 hour drive from the westcountry to be greeted like a long lost friend, although i had never met the man before. I went on to have a wondoerful 2 hour lesson with him and had the pleasure of getting to know him a bit in that time. I think that what makes a person great in the public eye is their interpersonal skills and he has it by the truckload. He seemed to take a real interest in me which was very endearing. He explained to me his playing background from his time in the Royal Marines along with his playing ethos, the never ending quest for self improvement, such as the time he spent on developing his limb independence. That formed the basis of my lesson with him by his "playing card" exercise i.e. different drums marked on the red cards and alternating "left" and "right" sticks marked on the black cards.
That was my day spent with the great Craig Blundell. A wonderful man indeed.

Whilst reading this thread it made me wonder what response you'd get on a guitar forum. Not a great deal, I suspect. Shows what a great bunch our top drummers, and drummers in general, are! |

Posted - 14/06/2012 : 01:15:03 Carl Palmer introduced himself to me .That was a trip!Very nice guy. Hung out with Bun E. Carlos for about 3 hours after a clinic listening to hilarious stories about John Lennon,Mick Fleetwood,Mr.Slingerland and Mr.Ludwig ect. Also met a long list of Historical American Blues Drummers.Drummers are easy to talk to compared to some other musicians I have met. What do you think? |

Posted - 13/06/2012 : 08:59:06 Ian Paice............At a drum clinic, fantastic player, top bloke and a real gent. Cozy Powell..........On a Virgin flight to LA, chatted about drums, recording etc for hours and invited me backstage on the Brian May tour, couldn't make it but what a diamond bloke! Steve Smith..........At drum clinic, I was a bit in awe of such a talent ! Mickey Dee...........At a hotel in LA, signed one of my drum skins and invited me to the Motorhead gig at the Hardrock the following night, tremendous drummer and awesome drum solo! Craig Blundell.......At a drum clinic, very modest chap for such a huge talent and a really nice geezer !
All these top flight musicians have taken time to chat and encourage and it proves to me that the drumming community is unique in it's sense of camraderie ! |
