What a mess. Two weeks to go and they say "sorry we are 3,500 staff short" WTF! How can a private firm that has won the contract to supply security for the Olympics be allowed to get in to this mess? Shirley their competitors that were competing for the business in the first place are going to be well and truly hacked off! When did G4S realise they were so far in the sh|t? I doubt it was in the last day or two!

So now the armed forces have to bail out G4S whilst the government is in the midst of slashing their numbers. I know we are used to politicians being hypocritical but jeezus! This is on top of the 13,000 personnel the forces are already providing for the Olympics!!!!

Och well, with a minister responsible for Security called Brokenshire, what else could we have expected...

They're free and have been trained in crowd control.

Just a thought.

**pedant alert **

Good idea, but you don't need to be s.i.a licenced for stewarding, but the guards provided by g4s will have to be.

Yes but they could have been called on long ago.
Although I don't know whats involved in SIA licencing, I'm sure its pretty straightforward.
Too late now anyway.

There's a 30hr course, followed by 1 practical and four exams (on the course I went through), which you'd have to have been paying no attention to the course to have to fail. It's not cheap to do the course and then get the licence, but would probably have worked out cheaper the government to pay for a load of people to do that rather than pull the army in.

It was interesting at SITMS they had G4S security

Few were checking passes and they even let a guy walk in carrying a sharp sword & knife

If they are so concerned with a terrorist attack why not use the Army anyway?

A few lumps in high viz jackets earning a bit extra is no deterrent to anyone with a cause?

Security at this sort of thing largely isn't to stop terrorism. It's mostly to stop people bringing in their own food and drink.

True

They would have been the first ones applying.
They should have got Showsec involved who do all the major gigs including Wembley and major festivals.
There seems to be a huge never ending budget for this side of things.Even if they get fined £50M and are ploughing on it means that it is not hitting their profit margin?

How much for 10,000 high viz jackets?

I can't understand most English people these days and teachers want a pay rise??

Years of thick people having kids....bung them in the Army so they talk proper like in the hood!!
Captain Bubble Posted - 14/07/2012 : 13:51:03
To be fair, that could be an advantage as there will probably be thousands of foreign spectators. However, the guards, SHOULD be able to understand orders given in English!

'Security guards provided for the Olympics by the firm G4S may not be able to speak English, the company's chief executive has admitted.'

Really ? What could possibly go wrong ?

I'm more concerned with Sepp Blatter getting back to The Dorchester without any hold ups enroute!

There's two ton of soldiers swanning about in Colchester which is 45mins on the direct rail route into Stratford.Make use of them?

There's about 40,000 in Germany isn't there?...bring 'em back. Just don't let them 'Cross the Rubicon'

You can come home - on the understanding that this is just a visit...
and don't bring your tanks.

I went and got my security licence back in December, and they new back then that they were massively short of people (if I remember correctly the figure was around 8000 short throughout the u.k back then). They don't seem the most organized of companies. I passed an interview with them in march for a job at the events in cardiff, had a phone call a few weeks later saying I was "in the application screening process" and to wait and hear about training. A couple of weeks to go and my application is still at the same stage with no news on training. I can imagine that a lot of people such as myself will have felt messed around by them and a lot of people such as myself will have found employment elsewhere while they drag their feet. One thing I will say in their favour though is that they can't just round people up and force them to take the job, they can't be held responsible if not enough candidates have applied for the positions. I did read somewhere that the value of the contract had been increased quite significantly due to the number of staff they were told they'd have to find being raised by quite a large amount.

The 2012 McDonalds UPS ATOS EDF Coca Cola Olympics are a total mess, classic Bad British Management and Bumbling Bureaucrats. Massively over budget too.
