So just got my first ever alchemy cymbal a 16" rock crash from the drum shop sale. However on close inspection theres a small chip out of the body just away from the bell and a fairly deep half inch dent near the middle Ive emailed the guys as to what they suggest but im gutted as its the best crash ive heard for a long time. Im sure they'll sort me out but im wondering do these imperfections ever turn into something worse or is it not worth worrying about?? Ive never owned an istanbul cymbal so not sure how durable they are Any advice welcomed |

The "chip" could be a casting mark or made by the lathing knife. Sometimes the lathe can stop or the cymbalsmith has cut a little too deep.
As for the dent it shouldn't really matter that much but i'm sure the seller will sort you out unless it was mentioned that it was a second they were selling. |
Resonators and Ufips....just beautiful. www.vintageolympic.co.uk
Rotocasting is definitely the pinnacle of cymbal manufacture!

the Alchemy cymbals I used to have both had Factory imperfection's on them ie a couple of chips and dents I would'nt worry about them, if you got the crash cheap and it sounds good whats the problem? |

On the Stan Alchemy 10" hats I have there is a sizable dent on one of the bells that looks like a hefty stray hammer blow and there are a couple other rough lathing marks but they sound very good indeed.
I don't think you need feel quite so gutted Richie. Just look at the cymbal with your ears

| If you're expecting big-three-like machine perfection out of Alchemy, you bought the wrong cymbals. Those pies are made by hand by sweaty Turkish blokes in an environment that would make a Health and Safety inspector have conniptions. Every Agop cymbal I have (or have had) has imperfections in it. And I dearly love (and loved) them all. |

I've got a 16 inch Alchemy crash that warped about 10 minutes after I started playing it.
It still sounds fantastic but I can understand your consternation at not having a perfect looking piece of metal. |

I'm hearing lots (about) the Alchemy stuff, but I've never played any.
Could someone compare them to ranges in the Zildjian or Sabian range - just for comparison? |

I'm waiting for my Alchmey 19" Sweet crash to arrive that I bought in the same sale, I will report back when it arrives.
I do have some 12" Alchmey Sweet hats tha arrived yesterday after swapping them with Brother Moose, not had chance to use them yet, but they look lovely and there are a few small areas that are unlathed due to inclusions, but that's the deal when it's hand made/hammered/lathed cymbal. If you're happ with the sound keep it and I'm sure you'll be covered if it develops into an issue
Shaggi - According to the Drum Shop site it makes Ref to A Customs, can't comment on that though TBH. |

the sweet crashes are sort of similar to A customs. more trash in the istys as you would expect... the Alchemy line is being re-modeled now though from the videos at the drum fest. personally I really like the alchemys... just never got round to owning them, just played a lot of them when I was in istanbul. they seemed particularly proud of them in the shops I went to. |

Hooly thread revival! I ended up with an 18" as they had a thief on the staff who nicked loads of gear and it never re appeared.
Love the 18" so it's going no where. |

| same as that, i've a 21 alchemy raw ride. when i bought it new, it had a dirty bit scrape on the underside which i presumed was why i got it so cheap (100euro). it's the mutt's nuts and has the nicest bell of any of the rides i've owned. it's also reaaally loud! i play 70's-style rocknroll and the rest of my cymbals are either avedis or murat diril rennaisance with a couple of byzances for variation; the alchemy sits in there lovely with them - probably the best 100 blips i've ever spent. |
