Hi,
I was recently looking down my Itunes and realised it's pretty much all one genre (Hard Rock/Metal). So I was wondering whether any of you lovely people could recommend albums or artists I could check out that would expand my horizons? It can be anything from gospel to death metal, aslong as it has what you guys would consider great music/drumming.
Im completely open to all music and enjoy listening to anything thats exciting musically....I just dont know where to start!
It will be much appreciated! |

| If you want excellent, tasteful, influential rock drumming then check out any of the '70s Genesis albums apart from Trespass as Phil Collins hadn't yet joined then. |

Well if you want something a bit different you could do worse than check out Nation Beat http://www.nationbeat.com/
They're a New York based band made up of US and Brazilian musicians. They're heavily influenced by traditional north Brazilian music but cross over with New Orleans funk/jazz stuff. Think Stanton Moore meets Maracatu.
Hope you enjoy them. |

| Steely Dan, The Meters, Bobby Womack, Sly & The Family Stone. They've all floated my boat recently and they're pretty far from hard rock.... |

| Bill Evans' 'Sunday At The Village Vanguard'. The late Paul Motian on drums. Some of the finest brush playing on record. And check out Miles Davis' 'Kind Of Blue' if you've never heard it. Jimmy Cobb on drums; 'Freddie Freeloader' is my go-to tune for swing ride practice! |

| ...or you could perhaps read some interviews with the artists you have in your iTunes and get a listen to what influnces them? It's a good way of gently expanding your listening habits and avoids the jolt of discovering Bartok or Barbera Streisand rather too obliquely?! |

It Bites - anything from this British prog-pop-hard-rock outfit, because they are really rather special !
John Coltrane - "A Love Supreme" or (my favourite Coltrane recording,) "Live at Birdland" ... astounding playing from Elvin Jones on drums - I was utterly transported when I first heard it. (Coltrane's no slouch either !!)
Bill Bruford - Any of his 70s solo albums are worth a listen for a slice of 70s electric-jazz/art-rock, try the brilliantly titled "Gradually Going Tornado" for starters.
King Crimson - there is incredible music from all eras of the life of King Crimson, but you might want to check out Bruford's work with the band on "Red" from 1974, and "Discipline" from 1981 - two very different recordings, but with surprises around almost every musical corner.
Donald Fagan - one half of the mighty Steely Dan writing partnership, his 1982 album "The Nightfly" is one of contemporary popular music's true masterpieces - marrying pop, jazz, blues and a bit of funk, it is, by turns, quirky, slick, witty and hugely intelligent ... few people have ever got anywhere close to this sort of product in the "mainstream", mass appeal, popular music world.
Frank Zappa - many folk bandy around the word "genius", without really appreciating what it means ... Zappa was one of a kind, and displayed his particular brand of genius via a staggering amount of material (he released over 50 "official" albums during his lifetime). If you've not come across him before, I'd suggest starting with one of his "mid-period" albums - "Live in New York", "Sheik Yerbouti" or "Tinsletown Rebellion" - if you don't find anything you like on any of these records ... you're either clinically dead or have had your musical taste centres cauterised at an early age !! (Also, it's worth mentioning that, if you're easily offended, the likelihood is that you'll find something distasteful on pretty much any Zappa release ... just so you know !)
So much great music ... so little time to listen to it all !! |

Gamblers Life by Johnny Hammond (Jazzy Funky Goodness) Message from a Soul Sister by Vicki Anderson Everybody Loves the Sunshine by Roy Ayers Spaced by Shawn Philips (Folky Funky stuff) Rotary Connection - Loads of good stuff Let my People Go by Darondo (Soulful) Lewis Taylors first Album (soul/gospel) Moon Fire by Boy and Bear - Australian Folk/indie outfit Time (The Revelator) by Gillian Welch Batchelor No.2 by Aimee Mann Nathaniel Ratelife Portico Quartet Wilco - New one The Whole Love has some great stuff on there Carnavas by Silver Sun Pickups - Smashing Pumpkins-esque
This lot is on the ipod at the moment as I go through fazes. It's quite interesting to see every ones posts because the similarities in the bands/music genres is startling. Definitely some new ones for me to check out.

Anything with Jon Christensen or Jack Dejohnette, but especially:
Keith Jarrett 'My Song' and Ralph Towner 'Solstice' for JC and 'New Directions in Europe' for JD.
Those should introduce the concept of subtlety!

These are in the UK at the moment. I've just this very evening booked to go and see them in Bristol at the weekend (I only saw a poster a couple of days ago). I have 100 Days, 100 Nights, which is very good, and I get the impression they'll be an excellent live act. |
