I'm building an edrum kit at the moment based on a Roland Pd-120 design, and so i need to get some 12" heads for it. The Rolands seems to retail at around £30, which is a bit pricey for me, then there seems to be many other brands of which I have no experience. Theres some called Drum-Tec, which range from £8-£22 a head for a 12" but there's £15 postage on these being based in germany
http://www.drum-tec.de/meshheads-c-57.html
, then there's some on ebay from arcade music which are a very reasonable £9 also. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mesh-drum-head-12-Very-strong-Single-ply-/160456332752?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Drums_Percussions_MJ&hash=item255bf155d0

I read an article on digital drummer which compared them all and came to no resounding conclusion, which was a bit unhelpful. What I dont want to do is spend 50 quid buying heads for this kit to realise they are a load of rubbish, then have to spend £150 on roland heads. Thats said if there's little difference then I dont want to sink an unessecary £100 extra on the roland brand name.

Any thoughts?

I really like the mesh head that's on my Jobeky snare. I do believe there was a chap touting a new 3-ply mesh head recently; maybe search it?

The mesh head articles are among the most downloaded and the ones for which we have had the most feedback and discussion. I'm not sure what you expected. We compared all the available samples, detailed their price and performance on two key criteria - sound levels and bounce. What more could we have done to be more "helpful"?
You need to decide what's important to you - silence, "feel" or price and made a decision based on those criteria.

Whooah there... I'm not attacking your magazine so there's no need get so defensive. I only mentioned the article as I would imagined some people might point me in the direction of it and I've already read it and didn't find any obvious answers within it. As it makes no specific reccomendations (other than spending more money is good) it simply says it's down to the users choice between noise and rebound. So it was unhelpful (in my view) in the sense that you start off with a bewidlering choice of heads and then failed to narrow down the choice to a clear winner or reccomendation. i.e. Best for value, best unlimted budget, best for quiet, best for feel.

It's all very well saying it's down to you decide, of course it is, but surely the point of having a comparison review is to identify favourites and draw conclusions with regard to which are best. I didn't see that in the review.

Anyway, Russ from Hummdrums was very helpful so I'm trying some of his 3 ply ones out.

Hi, Thanks and no worries.. Sending them out today. These ones are three thin mesh plys... quite smooth to the touch which we find the closest we could get to the texture of a normal coated head but remaining extra quiet.

Like any drum head a lot of it is personal preference feel wise... lets see if people like them, I know they work really well on our own drums.

there is a picture or two of them with the logo (small and subtle) on the facebook wall which I believe a link to is in the sig below...

I take your point - but it is so personal. For some people, feel is important. For others, it's all about silence. As you can see, some did well in both - but those are the more expensive models.
Good luck with the three-ply. We'll soon be testing those as well.
