This turned up today - 1930s Premier Gold glitter paint 14" x 10" concert snare:

It is pretty well complete. The more modern badge seems to have been fitted when it was repainted or recovered by Premier as there is a pencilled date 14-5-59 and note (see image 3) inside, so need not be changed.
It would have had gut snares and the parts to mount them are there. The top snares work and seem in good shape - maybe a little stretched. Fantastic condition and an amazing sound.

Ahhh, nice one, love the insides being so clean and no rust and both levers are intact. Ok need to find a proper badge and real old fashion snare wires for the bottom snare. Are you sure it was rewrapped? How's this wrap compared to the bass drum?

I am experiencing lever envy...

Ludwig, Rogers, HipGig. Too many snare drums. Lots of K's. Endorsee for Protection Racket, KickPort and De La Cruz Custom Drumkeys.

I will try to post some detailed pictures. This is an exquisitely made thing. The internal lever mechanisms and damper are clean and perfect and rust-free. Top snares fine. Bottom snare is set up for an 11 strand gut or silk/wire arrangement. It was recovered not repainted and the badge is exactly right for 1959 which is the date of the recovering noted on the inside of the shell. The gold sparkle wrap is very close to that painted on the bass drum of similar era http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/davidh_03/PremBD2.jpg

David, I have several of those type of finishes, they are just rough to the touch but I don't think they are painted on the shell

Are you sure this is a 30's snare? They used those lugs and snare mechanisms post war for a little while. And yes they are fantastic beautiful things. I love the shell on mine. Unfortunately the mechanism is nowhere near as good a condition as yours.

Most accurate catalogue picture of the detail I have found makes me think its a 1937 Dominion Ace but they may have had a few bits lying about after the war. It is covered in a pale gold sparkle plastic but this is noted as a 1959 repair job. The bottom snares will be a nightmare to sort out and from experiments I think silk/wire wound will be the best. Can you get them? Yes, in any guitar shop.

Yes they did but the "wraps" were limited to painted Ivory or Ebony finishes and then black and white duraplastic and chrome snares and by 1950, the first white pearl
