Strangeley attracted to playing dampened drums at the moment, even after years of playing without any whatsoever. Though not dampening the toms...

No... DHDW is my teaching business here in Leicester, housed in a re-claimed hosiery factory!
I do most of my playing these days in an outfit called 'Two Gentlemen Play The Pops', which I bet you can probably guess a couple of things about...
On the score of damped kits, I'm kind of surprised that concert tom kits didn't hit the circle of fashion once again? Someone's missing a trick there. Love the sound of those old 70's films with big, blocky concert tom fills in them - usually right next to a passage involving a talking drum and a cop stealthilty climbing stairs, gun-first!

Spotify users;Best bit of Music I've heard for many a year = 'Dirty Harry' theme by the legendary LaLo Schifrin. Just amazing Drums and Bass. Concert Toms of course with some ace Tabla. Naff film though.
'Bullit' is more like it - also great sound track by Mr Lalo.

Never ever do I damp any of my drums except the kick, even close miced! I just think drums were meant to sound as they are or they would come damped from the factory, ring is good. Its all about tuning for me

Anyone ever said "Can you put gaffa tape over all the strings, mate. Guitars givin off some harmonics." :)

You only really get that damped sound if the drums are cheap and have been in a cold cellar for a few decades.

Sitting on top of the mountain isn't the most interesting bit of the climb. Sitting at the bottom aint much fun either.

Ah, but string players often DO damp the strings, for instance by holding the edge or palm of the hand against them immediately after plucking, or by holding an acoustic instrument tighter against their body when they want a thinner tone then holding it away for full tone, but obviously this is not so easily achieved with drums!

I use a CS reverse dot head and 2 e-rings on my snare... and a piece of tape on the bottom head across the wires occasionally. it's all about how you play them...

I heard some drums come with dampers fitted

TBH I tend not to damp mine because the sort of venues we play are not huge and often the kit is un mic'd so I just let the boom. I wouldn't hesitate to calm them down and focus them with some damping if required.
I was recording a few weeks back and when I was messing around on the kit having just set it up I got a message through the foldback saying it sounded like 'God taking a sh*t in there'. Cue sensible damping.
