I've got a dilemma. I'm not in the best of health at all, and can see the day rapidly approaching when I'll have to stop drumming permanently. This will definitely be within 2 years at the latest.

I've always fancied a vintage Ludwig kit - blame Joe Morello for that - but have been put off by the price. So now would be the time to go for it, if ever I'm going to do it. Example: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ludwig-Early-1970s-Ludwig-Super-Classic-Silver-Sparkle-3-Ply-Drum-kit-/170812444187?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Drums_Percussions_MJ&hash=item27c5370e1b#ht_500wt_1361

The only way I could afford to do it would be to sell nearly everything I've got, apart from my Ks and Acrolite snare.

I've got a PDP CX 7-shell kit, a Yamaha Dtxpress II, and a Peavey Radial Pro, plus a large Gibraltar rack. I reckon on a good day I could see £300 for the PDP, £200 for the Yam, and goodness knows for the Peavey - somewhere between £200 and £300 probably, plus about £125 for the rack, making at the most £925.

I don't reckon that would quite buy me the 60s 3-shell Luddy that I'd like, so would have to put another couple of hundred into it.

But - at the end of the day, I would have sold a really decent 7-shell maple kit, a useful ekit, and an unusual maple 5-shell kit plus tons of hardware, for 3 old drum shells.

In the early 90s I had a Superclassic kit in charcoal shadow; 10/12/13/16/22 as I recall. I didn't appreciate it then, but wish to goodness I'd kept it, because I wouldn't now have this dilemma (Anyone got a similar kit? I'd love to know where it ended up).

Is it worth it? Would I regret it? What would you do?

PDP CX, Ludwig Super Classic, Acrolite, Zildjian A, Ks, Hardcases, Yamaha DTxpress.

Hi Nigel, sorry to hear that about your health.

I think I probably would go for it! Sounds like you might just about be able to do it all without it costing you much more, and be the sound of it you're not that attached to the stuff you already have. Not withstanding the Radial kit, the rest of it you could replace with equivalents easily enough if you miss any.

Mind you, I may not be the most qualified to give advice here - my wife is utterly bemused by my gear-buyung antics of late.. I've bought 5 kits in the last year alone... !

Very sorry to hear of your problem. If you really do have such limited time to play and fancy a Luddy do not wait one minute longer than necessary, get one and enjoy it to the max!

Yeah I have a very aggressive form of cancer and time could well be running out; I'll find out more on Thursday. I was diagnosed in 2003 and have managed to keep playing, but it's dragging me down more and more.

Sorry to hear of your problems Nigel, and your dilemma. Could you sell some of your stuff and perhaps (though I don't normally advocate this sort of thing) get a small, cheap, loan for the balance. Then you could keep your favourite gear and have something you have always wanted, paid off in instalments. Alternatively, look for an interest fee credit card and use it via Paypal.

Did she? Hope she finds another project that suits her. The drumming I've heard so far on Tasha's mix is great.

Hey Nigel -- health issues and advancing age are not reasons to give up playing: they are the very reasons to keep playing! Whether it's drums, guitars, any instrument in fact, or being a singer, I believe that being involved with producing music is utterly theraputic and age-reducing (or reversing!).

My old covers band has been going since the Great Flood, or it feels like it has, and the singer and I are the only original members now. When I started with this band, my first gig was on my fifteenth birthday, and the singist Pete, was all of 19. After a long break we got back together. Pete suffers badly from arthritis, is severely diabetic, has high blood pressure and spondilitis. Every year, getting towards his birthday, he declares that he is going to pack up singing for good. Every year, me and the others, and BTW, Pete's wife, talk him out of it. He is a great front-man for the band, with loads of performing experience and an uncanny ability to connect with the crowd. He is an amazing singer and his voice just seems to get better. He is now 71 years old. He has always been self-employed as a painter and decorator, and despite his health problems still works virtually full time. I think it is his enjoyment of being in the band and all it entails -- practices, performing live, doing the occasional fresh demo CDs -- that keeps him young at heart. You'd think he was 20 years younger if you met him. I'm not too far behind him, and I am not going to give it up before it gives me up, I can assure you!

So as far as the Luddies are concerned, GO FOR IT, and perhaps more importantly, keep playing the goddam things. Pete's been looking at buying a new PA system, by the way!

Hi Nigel, I'm so sorry for your health problems, my brother in law is undergoing treatment for lymphoma at the moment and I can hardly imagine what a strain you are under, for what it's worth my advice would be to buy your vintage Luddy, the pleasure it will bring you can only be a tonic, most of us spend our lives worrying about money and holding on to posessions simply because selling them will not bring enough to justify it. Clear the decks, sell your old gear for whatever you can, buy an old keystone badge kit and enjoy yourself, it is the very least you deserve.
I wish you well.

Thanks everyone. It seems I've got to have a blood transfusion - this weekend - and will then go on a new radioactive injected drug regime for 6 months. What happens after that depends on how I respond to the new drug. So I intend to carry on as normal for as long as possible and certainly to look for that Luddy! Music is definitely therapeutic and thoughts of it, plus rehearsing and gigging, have given me something to look forward to and contribute largely to my reasons for carrying on.

Poole Perc have a 60s 13", 16", 22" kit in black wrap in the shop (although for some reason it's not on their website?) It's pretty scruffy and has seen some serious action, but it's one of the nicest sounding Luddys I've heard, everything you'd want from a classic vintage kit.

You could do worse than give them a buzz and see how much they want for it - I'd imagine it would be less than that kit on eBay.
They might do you a deal on the CX - it's certainly worth asking.

cheers

I was going to chime in that you should go for it. But I've just seen the other thread. I'm gutted for you Nigel, and I hope there's been a mistake, or there's a way to top up your income a little (can't remember if you play in a band?). Even if you can't go for the Luddies now, don't sell ALL your gear, keep something to play.. as others have said, keeping playing is beneficial, probably physically, definitely psychologically!

Most importantly though, I hope you respond well to the new treatment, all the best!

Hi Nigel, also sorry to hear that about your health.

My philosophy is regret the things you have done, not the things you wish you had done.

If you can do it, sensibly natch, then do it.

Well, I did it - sort of!

What we have here is a '61 Super Classic that was rewrapped in '78 and had blue/olive badges and that bloody awful Premier tom holder fitted.

I have the original kick drum mounted cymbal arm (although not its mounting block) and intend to refit it, put appropriate Keystone badges on, refit a rail tom holder and put a blanking plate over the Prem tom holder holes.

But it was cheap! - £350.

I'm happy :)
