First post back on the MD forum in a few years, been out of the game for a bit, but back and falling in love with drumming all over again.
Basically I had 2 gigs yesterday with over 5 hours sat on my stool, i must say, my a**e is sore today and had a one or two bouts on pins and needles whilst playing. so think the stool got to go and a new one nailed down asap
My posture has always been very good and not liked the idea of a back rest or the 'throne' just a comfortable sturdy stool.
My question is, what do you guys use, and what do you recommend? |

Many here will recommend the Silverstone seats too.
It's best to sit on as many different ones as you can though. |

| I was in a similar position to you not so long ago. I've tried several of the 'better' stools, with backrests and without, and had very little success. I ended up picking up a Pearl Roadster round top throne second hand for about £50ish quid a month ago and it's great - very sturdy, quite cheap and the hardware will last. The cushion is great, too - it's not too soft so you feel properly seated... |

Sitting on top of the mountain isn't the most interesting bit of the climb. Sitting at the bottom aint much fun either. |

the only thing i dont really put a price on is my ears, i'll spend anything to keep them in tact, the rest needs to fall into a budget, which for me at the moment is 150.00 tops, like most people drumming is a hobbie, although it does pay for a lot of things for me, it isnt enough to pay for the mortgage |

| roc n socs are great stools, i have a tama cloth top (vinyl gets way too sweaty) saddle shaped 'first chair' had it for years. If it broke i would be straight out and buy another. I still maintain the stool is one the MOST important parts of the kit. If you aint comfy you aint gonna play well! simples ;) |

| I prefer the saddle style to round thrones, and have a RocnSoc and a Mapex, both nice and comfy though the Mapex is vinyl and really needs a cloth cover. I tried somebody's Silverstone saddle style throne on Sunday which was very nice. If I needed another, I might consider one. |

Predictably, I'm going to recommend Roc 'n' Soc. I tried out a multitude of stools before settling on the RnS. It was pricier, admittedly, but, as mentioned above, what price is your comfort if you're going to spend 2 hours or so sat at on the thing at a time? The reasons I chose the seat over the many others I tried were:
- Good-quality cloth covering (and since discovered very hard-wearing to boot. It still looks as-new - see photo in sig. It's three years-old now and has done countless gigs and rehearsals). - It's firm and supportive in all the right places, but has just enough 'give' to feel soft. - It suits and promotes good posture (well, to me it does). - The base (admittedly, a boggo Gibraltar one) went low enough. - It's thinner than many of the competition meaning the seat thickness isn't restricting stool height.
There were others that were nearly there for me but there was only £20-30 in it. |
Yamaha 9000, '64 L400/Yamaha 8000/Yamaha brass/Premier XPK/Pearl brass piccolo snares, Zildjian A and A Custom dustbin lids, Pearl Eliminator double pedal, Roc 'n' Soc stool and a total lack of practice. |

I see loads of younger drummers who sit on very cheap, uncomfortable stools. It seems as drummers get older (and heavier) they start to appreciate the benefit of a better quality stool. It's hard to convince a young drummer with limited cash to spend £100 or more on a seat when he or she would rather buy more cymbals or a faster pedal, but you know that one day they'll see the light! There's loads of great stools out there and it's a very personal choice. I really like the Pearl D2000BR but it's really heavy to cart about. The Roc n Soc stools are very comfy but you need to get a decent base. Tama 1st Chair would be my other choice, great seat and good bases too! Loads of drummers end up with bad backs so the sooner you get a good quality stool the better as far as I'm concerned. |

| I bought a second hand pork pie on ebay and it is very comfortable, I can get through two hour gigs and four hour rehersals without a problem, cost about £100, well worth it. |

| ^ I have not heard otherwise. Very happy with my Silverstone seat. If my budget was £150 for a new seat I would try find the extra £50 or so for a Silverstone. Cases are included in the price too. You need to wait a while for them to be made but we are talking hand made and top quality leather. |
