12" old style drum here, doesn't seem right as a marching drum? could be a bargain.

Unusual! 4 lugs, basic strainer, strap hook, small size. For Marching Samba/Carnival Band? Probably sounds quite crisp and funky.

Unusual, but probably not a bargain at that price. Sonor also have a huge range of educational and marching band drums and this comes from those series.

Agreed, it might be a Sonor, it might sound good and look pleasingly eccentric but £80 can you you better. I would almost like to get it as a curio, but no more than almost!

It is a Sonor: a forerunner to the newer lower end marching percussion. I've seen those strainers before; I'd actually hazard a guess at late 90's.

But Sonor's lower end marching percussion is still built to the standard of most companies mid range.

The current nearest snare to this (MB205) is over £200 (Albeit with a better strainer if you don't mind plastic) !!!!!

It would perhaps make a nice little auxiliary snare and mini timbale beside a main snare. I actually quite like the ultra simple strainer: on, off, tension adjustment....what more do you need?!

:)
I've bought it, will get it next week - a bit concerned about how well 4 lugs will work on a 12" drum, but it looks like they're the decent heavy Sonor rims, so it's worth a pop. I used a 12x5 Sonor Hilite snare for years, as a lightweight/portable go-to, hopefully this will be as useful.

Excellent! I would be very interested to hear how you like it. I have so many drums already that my policy is now "NO MORE" unless it is one I make for a particular use!
Those old Premier New Era educational snares are sweet little drums, the same size but more basic still than the Sonor, and I think they have 4 tensioners and much thinner hoops. I too wondered about 4 lugs, but with tough hoops rigidity is less of a question. I recently made a 13" snare with 6 lugs and standard weight hoops (probably less solid than those on that Sonor, and it works just fine. My timps have 8 lugs, even on the 40" one, but I have found that the 3 mm angle iron hoop is rigid enough to prevent problems.

Great find.

VERY rare in this country...

...shows you how simple a strainer can be.

The same company that brought the Signature strainer...!

With you Gaz on the decade...

I wouldn't be worried about the price..."show me another" as they say!

How do you like it Jim? I might be able to make a cradle to hold it to a stand if you need one. I have a 10" snare/tom on my hihat stand which is great for high snare and timbale sounds.

Cheers cap'n, but I have a couple of snare stands it'll fit onto :) Not ****ted it in anger yet, but initial impressions are good:
very well made and solid, as you'd expect. Welded shell. The strainer seems to work perfectly! Not sure how it will withstand the energy of a gig, but it certainly seems to work a treat. A simple lever, held to engaged by the tension of the snares themselves - genius.
The shortage of lugs gives the drum an odd sound - tapping round the edge of the head reveals huge tension gradients, and this gives the overall sound a rather cloudy, 'bangy' quality. May require a smidgeon of damping. Still seems to sound bright & snappy though. Conclusion - win!
