Were there two sound feeds? One that they7 heard in then stadium which we ended up hearing, and one that was supposed to go through the telly>?

Tama (well, a badge on the bass), Zildjian, Grandad-made tambourine, Premier HD heads (8 years old now, and still going strong). Could do with lessons! http://s872.photobucket.com/albums/ab285/AnthonyOConnell/My%20Drum%20Kit/

I don't think so I've watched it again. I'm almost certain Paul started singing in the wrong place. Too early. Like maybe there was supposed to be 2 bars of click before the track and he only waited for one. Just watch Abe Laboriel's reaction when he starts singing, he definitely wasn't expecting it and signals something's up. Then he immediately keeps time on the hats while he starts fiddling with something down by his floor tom, a few bars later the track magically syncs up right on beat one. I'm guessing Abe managed to skip the track on a bar and saved it?!

Tony Livesey on 5Live had it right I think, he made the point that we'd just shown the future of athletics with the old guard handing torches to the new up and coming athletes of the future. Then "Paul McCartney appears aged 103, and plays Hey Jude again".

Old to new then back to the old agan.......

Disappointed. Should have been the Rolling Stones up there...

The Stones would not do a show for one song and I like the fact that they wouldn't.

Macca is everywhere these days and although as crew we all work together at various points..if I hear Hey Jude once more...

Tom Jones would have been better.

No,as I'm with Van Morrison at present,Mike & the Mechanics in August, but my son was there with Arctic Monkeys flying the Croatian flag.

Macca has Paul Davies with Abe.

I actually agree with Ian, I'm sick of his appearing at these gigs singing the same old same old. Arctic Monkeys were ace, Macca was, well Macca.

I don't necessarily think that McCartney was the ideal choice, but I don't buy this argument. The Olympics is a sporting event, not a musical one - the comparison is unfair. And the rest of the (non-sporting bit of the) ceremony was focused on Britain's history, traditions, and cultural heritage, so an ex-Beatle was an appropriate choice in that respect.

I agree that it's about time he rode off into the sunset. I was hoping he wouldnt turn up at the ceremony. He's like a cold sore imo. Turning up to ruin most events.

Is that a new name for it? He managed Elliot Minor when I did their lighting. He didn't believe in the need for a tour manager.

I loved the opening ceremony, it was a fantastic spectacle. I thought Arctic Monkeys were great. Paul Mccartney? . I love the Beatles and the man is, quite rightly, a legend. I guess on a worldwide scale he was the obvious choice, and Hey Jude the obvious song choice ('Laaaa laaa laaa lalala laaaaa' is the same in any language right!) I don't even care that he fluffed the start... but if I never hear that song again it'll be too soon!

This!

If you watch carefully you can see that Paul is completely in sync with the barely audible audio that is going out to the stadium pa, the picture then pans to a couple of people holding hands whilst the production team sort out their **** and sync the correct audio feed with the tv picture. I genuinely think that he didn't cock up. He can be woefully flat with the best of them, but this time I think the production crew were to blame!

Not a chance. He stuffed it. Came in too early.

1. Why would a feed issue would be EXACTLY a bar out of time...

2. Abe (Paul's drummer) gives it all away. Watch his reaction when Paul starts to sing. He clearly remarks "NO!" frantically, and then starts keeping time with stepped hats on beat two. Trying to ensure Paul now at leased stays with the beat so all they need to do is skip the track forward exactly a bar and it doesn't get even more of a mess. If he had intended to keep time in that section, he would have hit beat one, but it's a last minute save attempt.

3. You can then see the keyboard player, after watching patiently for a second possibly trying to see if Paul is gonna save it himself and come back to planet earth, he frantically starts fiddling with something - my guess is skipping the track on a beat, because just like magic, the very next bar, we're back in the game.

4. If you want anymore evidence that tracks were used for his performance, just go back a few seconds and watch the very end of the previous song he played. Watch him hold that end note and then say "WOOOOOOOOO!". What he does with his mouth and what you hear are nothing alike. He waits for the "WOOO!" to start and joins in with it.

Chaps...

From a friend of a friend of a friend, etc. This is from Paul Boothroyd, FOH sound for McCartney."So here are the facts. Being the Olympics and all things timing and world wide broadcasting etc etc the Olympic tech folks want any performance from any artist done via playback track
Paul doesn't like not performing live and to be honest Danny Boyle and others always wanted him to be live. So it Was.
We did though record a safety track to run alongside the live performance, so that in the eventuality of a last minute problem, say heavy rain etc (as there was little protection cover over the band) it could be used....
The end of "The End" went great, but for "Hey Jude" it didn't.
If you watched it carefully you can see Abe start to count in and cue Paul at the piano. This is after Paul played a couple of Key chords that helps him get his pitch and this also cue's the playback to start. The playback sends a click to Abe only and then he cue's Paul at the Piano with a stick count in to start the song. Unfortunately Paul, being a little nervous, and yes even after all these years he gets a little stage fright, he came in early and so what you heard was the playback shadow until it was realised and faded out to full live to broadcast.
I didn't even know this was all going on as I was fully live to the stadium as there where no apparent problems prior to our performance.
One of those things I guess being live. But those of you who can watch it again, just look at the expression on Abe's face when Paul comes in early....ha!

Just to add to this - the guide tracks are for the production crew because a lot of the video and lighting and pyro is set to timecode - it wasn't heard by the live audience in the stadium.

Thanks for that clarification M2V. So I was about right then, but you're saying when they realised all was lost they just cut the track completely instead of skipping it? Definitely sounds like you hear it skip forward, but I'll go with your man in the know.

Kinda sneaky of him to straight up lie about it on his twitter after the show though!

Yes - it was skipped forward by Abe, I think, so that everyone else could more easily fall into line with Paul.

So to me, this version appears to be different to the other youtube videos as the live feed is a lot louder (and the playback track is quieter in the background) and you actually hear Paul laugh whilst singing "and make it better" when he realises what has happened.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Glpna2VXT1U

When they realise then the playback track (which is a lot quieter than the live feed on this video) is then faded out. So this ties up with Meats reported version of events above.

When you hear it this way you realise Paul and the band just keep going even though Paul / they come in too early - and then it then doesn't seem quite so bad as it actually appeared to sound on the TV feed.

PLUS: the only other shyte thing about the opening ceremony was Her Misery the Queen's opening speech. It was too short, she displayed no enthusiasm for or pride in GB hosting the games, and her face looked like a smacked ar$e. Very bad form on her part. But the rest of it was amazing.

Whilst admitting to be more Pro her Maj I must admit she did keep it a bit short and appeared a tad grumpy.... maybe she had just previously had to do the lined-up handshake thing to all the athletes backstage Kinell that took some time for the procession to happen didn't it ?

As for Paul Mac.... ok he has done a bit for music in the past but after the Hey Jude cock up at Live Aid and now this one as well - please let's not wait for the 3rd jinx.

No, Live Aid, I'm showing my age now!

Macca came on near the end and sang Hey Jude (pretty sure it was or it might have been Let it be) and for the first half of the song his vocal did not go out to FOH but he was getting it through his monitor so carried on blissfully unaware that the crowd could not hear him. Maybe the crowd kept quiet as they preferred it that way heh heh but it looks as though even back then there were dark forces at work trying to gag Macca at main events.
