I just uploaded a song to my wordpress that I recorded using a cajon. The playing is nothing major - just a simple beat using cajon brushes, but i love the way the cajon "sound" has come out.

http://bucketoftentacles.wordpress.com/ (You just have to click "play" on Tentacle 3)

Recorded using two mics - one front and back. With some percussion overdubs.

It all started from a little piano loop i came up with (been learning for six months) and the rest of the track flowed from there.

Would welcome any feedback on playing / recording etc.

There is also a couple of other "cajon" tracks played with a few of my friends on the next post down (from 29/7). Single mic in the corner of the room job.

Thanks for the positive comments guys! I don't own an acoustic kit now, and tried a couple of recordings with vdrums, but it just didn't sound that nice - so i'm tapping the cajon mulling over what to do ........

This is my first foray into recording "everything", so i'm enjoying it - but its being very time consuming!

Cheers
Dan

Do the cajon brushes / rods produce much low end?

As with the hand, I think getting the nice low end is down to accuracy on that “sweet spot”. I don’t think the brushes are as loud as hand, but on the recording I had the washers right at the back so maximum “brushage” (new word). Of course with the washer closer to the business end of the stick then it will be more defined/louder.

On a quality stereo, the recorded bass is (IMO) a very nice satisfying thud and there is only a tiny smidgen of EQ. Waffling a bit here – but yes I think you do still get a nice low end with brushes.

Lion cajon - Thanks!
