So I am watching the games here in the USA and im wondering how much local band activity has picked up ! the pubs must be overflowing with happy people and the local cover bands must be busy, ,seems like the opertunity of a lifetime for gigging bands, im guessing there are gigs to be had day and night? inside, outside and everywhere in between ! So, how is it for all you guys !

Actually, no. No change at all. Maybe London is different.

Perhaps North London is different but here in South London there seems to be nothing. My brother and two friends did meet the Korean Judo Bronze Medallist and his family a few nights ago in the Angel Pub at Rotherhithe, lots of press and TV there too, but just a few locals in the pub, very quiet, no bands, fanfares, crowds or anything.

In my experience when there is an influx of visitors to an area or a captive audience of punters, land lords couldn't careless about putting on entertainment. The way they see it the pub is full anyway, why waste money on trying to attract more customers.

Im a bit surprised?? usually the local economy is booming with events a quater the size of a world event the Olympics ! Things are different here, usually pubs and clubs go nuts to be the spot the tourists flock to ! and it brings alot of money with it ! Nightlife is a big part of things, to say its thats quiet really seems odd to me lol, maybe my perspective from tele is different, it looks like there are so many people there, and it seems natural to think at nite they want to dance and party ! any of you near any of the big events /?

London is a city divided by a river and with a Mayor who has no interest in the southern half of it. About 95% of the games, and all the concerts, parties and events are North of the Thames, even though the South paid as much as the North for them. Even on the North side of the river the events are mostly in enclosed areas, so unless you have a ticket to be in them there seems to be little happening.

Wow, seems a shame to me that a mayor wouldent want to promote all of the city to do well and enjoy and prosper from an event such as this ! no matter what side of the river your on, everyone should be allowed to enjoy the olympics, not just rich ticket holders....everything is money

I live and work in Southwark and the exact figures are "not available" but it sounds like I might be paying about £1-2,000 extra a year in Business and Domestic rates to my Borough to pay for the games. For that, one of the Olympic Torches was carried through our borough for about 15 minutes, and that is about all we get. A railway line was extended through the borough for the Games, but they refused to give us a station. Apart from my brother and friends meeting the Korean Judo bronze medallist in a pub I have seen no sign at all of any activity or business coming here as a result of the Olympics. Foreign Corporations have ensured they get most of the booty.

Thats exactly how I assume it goes too. If anything there's a bit of a lul as people are going to the pubs to watch sport and they dont want a band playing over it!

London businesses are reporting the quietest period in years, the games have brought nothing to anyone outside the olympic park!

And there or at any venues you will pay through the nose

Round here the main roads are very busy due to olympic Lanes and Traffic light interval changes for the Games, and there are far more helicopters and woo-woos than usual, but small roads, shops, pubs etc are almost like a ghost town. I get the feeling many around here collected their children from the last day of school and cleared off abroad for the duration. All the tourists and extra business we were promised has failed to appear so far. Friends of mine rented a stall at a Craft Fair at Greenwich (one of only 3 Olympic venues in South London) and all day there was not a single visitor.

My mum was saying that every Olympic city ends up with few poeple visiting. It seems that where ever you are in the world, and where ever the venue, all tourists have the same idea...Don't go, it'll be packed full of sports punters. Only it isn't! We're going this weekend. We plan to head into the city deliberately. Who knows where we'll end up. Where would you recommend Sarf of the Riva?

Tama (well, a badge on the bass), Zildjian, Grandad-made tambourine, Premier HD heads (8 years old now, and still going strong). Could do with lessons! http://s872.photobucket.com/albums/ab285/AnthonyOConnell/My%20Drum%20Kit/

sorry to hear all this, maybe olympic events are different than other things, maybe its just to political. I can also imagine what happenes to all these venues that were built specifically for these games, you all will pay for it. Well anyway not what I expected to hear out of you guys, I wish it was different and you all had gigs entertaining all these fans!

Yes...the London Evening Standard today had stories of some businesses being 72% down on takings...

...and it's also been noticed that crowd control staff are hearding punters down channels from venue tube stations AWAY from local businesses (who'd taken on staff "for the rush".)

and cabbies are saying central london is a "ghost town"

as their regulars work from home instead of coming in

the list goes on!

Interesting stuff... and so I guess the gigging scene goes on as usual ;)

I think the big foreign corporate sponsors are doing everything they can to keep all visitors in the enclosures to ensure they spend all their money on MacD burgers and Coke, it's a complete stitch-up. Boris and Cameron have been making so many promises about how good it would be for London's businesses, but it seems to me to be a total betrayal of London and British businesses.

@ Wannabedrummer: As for good places in South London, Greenwich and Oxleas Woods are normally high on the list, but out of bounds now! It depends what you want to do, but a narrow strip along the Thames may be pretty crowded. The cable car near O2 Greenwich Peninsular is fun, but may be crowded. Imperial War Museum Lambeth, Horniman Museum Forest Hill. Ritzy cinema in Brixton always great, but I have not been there for quite a while, and pizza Franco Manca nearby in Electric Avenue Arcade does great Sicillian style pizza. I will be away, so The World's Biggest And Best Drum Factory In The Whole Of South Bermondsey (Probably) will sadly be closed.

I teach a black cabbie, I think the biggest problem is that they've put on free transport for the Olympics so nobody, if any, are going to pay for a cab. A real shame, such a bad decision.

I have just been out to the shops and the Vet, and around my area is a ghost town, shops almost deserted, park anywhere, cross roads without waiting. A friend was listening to the Radio this morning and London's tourist office and Chamber of Commerce were openly pleading for people to visit London and visit attractions.

In general, tourists don't like big events being held in the place they want to attend, so will go elsewhere to avoid being overrun by event attendees. Those attendees have a great time doing whatever, then clear off home, injecting little or no money into the local economy except perhaps at the car park and possibly a nearby coffee emporium. Its a lose lose situation for businesses as locals also stay at home to avoid the crowds, or go out of the area too.

This
I was there on Saturday for the Basketball. Left my Sister's in Milton Keynes at 10am. A train and two tubes to the Olympic Park, a look around, lunch at McDonalds, shop for a souvenir, matches from 2.30 to 6.30, two tubes and a train back to her house for 8.20pm. The day for us went almost like clockwork but there was no way we had the time or inclination to fit any type of shopping in.
My wife came along to meet up with her cousin. The big shopping centre next to the Olympic Park was CLOSED to all but Olympic ticket holders! Which totally scuppered her shopping day...while everyone with tickets, like me, was never going to go shopping. Her cousins daughter works in the shopping centre and confirmed that they've been "dead" throughout the games.
I also have to comment that the "enforced" one way pedestrian routes etc didn't help local businesses either. It was a major task for my wife to even meet us in the station at the end of the day, if her cousin wasn't a local and therefore in the know, goodness only knows what she would have done.
Yes, the organisations within the Park are creaming it in, everyone else is being hung out to dry.
And to address the original post, I'll echo what someone has already said. IF pubs are buzzing there's no need to hire a band. In fact after Super Saturday where we picked up 3 Golds in succession I'm surprised no ones posted that they got paid off. It would be a brave landlord that switched off his TV while Mo was gearing up in order to "treat" his customers to a covers band.

Once I've hit it, it stays hit.
