Hi all,

this has probably been posted before, or something very similar, so please be patient with me.

I've recently joined a band,(not gigging yet, but should be soon) but I'm only used to drumming along to tracks by myself, with headphones on, so now when practising with live guitars, it's obviously a whole new situation. I'm using ER20's, but I can hear more of myself and less of the band, so I can't always hear when the chorus/breaks are coming.

I think what I'm after, is a not too expensive metronome with headphone socket, or possibly, some kind of headphone gadgety thing on the market, that I can plug into their amps so I can control/monitor what I'm hearing and a metronome built in too? If you see what I mean!

Any help would be really appreciated guys.

Thanks,Ian

many options. mini mix desk with metronome in 1 chanel, and inputs or FOH feed into the others.

when you play live you will have a monitor to do that for you though. (in a half decent venue)

and finally, and the very cheapest option is to play quieter so you can hear the others.

Sounds like you could perhaps explore the option of adjusting your rehearsal monitoring set up a little first?

By this, I mean where things are positioned in the room: get the amps and PA facing you a little more maybe?

Sounds like recipe for disaster. You'll be hearing guitars and a click in your headphones, so when the guitarists (who can't hear the click) feel like the taking the tempo up ever-so-slightly you'll be hearing two tempos. Oh dear. I think you're better off just having their amps positioned so you can hear them properly.

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I'll go for the option of them repositioning their amps etc.

Any recommendations on metronomes, cheapish?

Ta.

So you can hear both the click and the guitarists at potentially different tempos.

No, I'm after a metronome for when I'm practicing on my own, I'm curious as to how good/bad my time keeping is.

I use Korg's MA-30. It's a bit of a bargain at £10 to £15.

Get an old drum machine or drum module (Traps is good). Then you can set your own creative exercises, leave gaps, double tempo, whatever.

Sitting on top of the mountain isn't the most interesting bit of the climb. Sitting at the bottom aint much fun either.

I use a Boss Dr Beat DB 90, think they retail at around £100 tho. I use it to play to a click when live and by myself, also has an input socket so if you wanted to you could put a FOH mix in to your in ears as well.

Yeah man, DB 90 is the business! So many cool little tricks and features. If you can afford it this is the one!
