good evening , wonder if anyone can help me with this . i have just started drumming for a rock and roll band who cover golden earings radar love , can anyone give me advise /help on the count in . i normally play latin and reggae so its all new to me !!! thanks in advance !!! matt

The hits are, if I remember correctly, written on 3-4-1 every two bars. But it doesn't really matter how you count the intro as you're in charge of bringing in the start of the song proper. As long as you get the tempo of that right and bring the bass player in, it'll be fine.

My band plays this, we agreed from the outset that as there is no tempo as such at the start that they simply watch me and hit they're notes as I hit the cymbals, so its visual and it aint gone wrong once yet.

Black Country drum technique = Gi'e it sum 'Ommer!

Yes there is (which is not to say that you can't do it perfectly well the way you do). The intro, with the exception of the rit at the end, is strictly in time and can be counted.

I've played this song on and off for the last 30 years and the intro has always been eye contact between the players as we tend to get a tad manic with it.

When I did it, we counted it thus:

(1 2 3 4) 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 1.....

Only play the bold counts!

That worked for me, and when I just checked, it still does.

Yep, that's how we did it - the banjo player couldn't grasp the notion of it starting on beat 3.

Are you sure it begins on 3? That would mean it also ends at 3....

Anyhow, the effects are the same. It is countable, even a beatbox could do it. No time-stretching involved.


BTW - do you know, how I always can tell if it is the banjoplayer knocking on my door?

If the knocking gets faster and faster, louder and louder, it is him. And, he doesn´t know when to come in.....

Musically it makes more sense for it to start on 3. The first three notes work as a cadence with the tonic note of F# reached on the strongest beat of the bar: beat 1. This sets up the rest of the intro, with the final note on beat 3 effectively also part of a cadence that only resolves when the bass comes in (on F# and beat 1 again) a few bars after the drums.
