I thought this may interest some of you here. I was listening to the radio today here in little ol' NZ and there was a lady being interviewed over the phone. She was nominating her "greatest song ever written" which they do every weekday. The person talks about where they live and what they do and then talk about their chosen song.
Well this woman from the small town of Picton (pop 2928) originally came from England and works here as an illustrator. She chose her song (Anita O'Day - Boogie Blues) and explained that her father was a great drummer and that her grand father started a drum company in the 1920s. The company was Premier and his name was Albert Della Porta. The interviewer just let it slide by and that was that. Her dad is Cliff Della Porta who also worked at Premier and did a fair bit of drum inventing from what I can tell.
I'd say she would have some great stories to tell and I've at least alerted their music reporter that it might be story worth following up. She said she's trying to encourage her dad to write his memoirs so maybe an opportunity to some Premier enthusiast in England to maybe help that along?

Hi Andy, The last I heard Cliff is still living, supposedly good friends with Sir Alan Buckley. My last communication with Sir Alan was almost 2 years ago. At that time, he was having lunch with Cliff that very week. I never heard back from Sir Alan, perhaps it's time to contact Tam Rankin, another forumite that has gone missing this past year. I wish I had Cliff's contact info, I'd call him.

Hi Capt, yes, he's still alive and is 85. You can get hold of his daughter . She sounds keen for him to get his memoirs down on paper. I reckon it'd be great if he did and maybe he just needs a bit of encouragement from some in the vintage drum community.

Nice story, Andy and I hope you can get more details. The late, lamented Professional Percussion drum shop in North London bought some of my timps and snare drums to sell. When I received the cheques they were signed by Albert D-P (old Premier had an interest in PP and Footes music shop). I wish I could have kept the cheque, as that signature is "aristocracy" to me!

Good point Capt W. Now edited.
Capt B - that was obviously a wee while ago; I understand he died in 1965. Has anyone written a book about this period of English drums? Sounds like there are a few good stories to be told.

I've written to Caroline, basically asking how we could interview her Dad, Cliff.

Since I'm in the US, we'll need a person of the writing persuasion to interview Cliff in the UK, Is there anyone on the forum who has the experience and skills to interview Cliff? If things go right maybe a Cliff Della Porta, Memoir, which is what Caroline seems to want from her Dad. I would say Diesel but I think he's still on that silly island in the Mediterranean

Time is of the essence, no sitting on our hands on this one, the gentleman is 85 years old

From what I've gathered from Caroline della Porta, Albert had 4 sons, only 3 worked in the shop. So this family could grow expotentially

Brum wins few accolades for beauty, scenery or whatever, but it is a large bustling city with plenty of stuff happening. NDF is a little south of Brum proper, at Cocks Moor leisure centre and golf course.
