I've just picked these fellers up-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&item=400315072658&nma=true&rt=nc&si=XqeT%252FsGTqudRjaUb7OdQ01s4t7g%253D&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

all mid 80's Reso shells with diecast hoops, etc, and the coveted 10" is in the mix, too.

Now then,

I am no expert on their construction, but would I be right in saying these drums were wrapped in plastic and then lacquered on top of that?? There's a seam on em which would suggest this, or am I way off the mark??

Anyone know??

I have a black 24" reso bass drum and was hoping to get these rewrapped and sell em on, keeping the ten for my black shadow kit.

If there's a seam then they're wrapped. Are you sure they're lacquered over the that?

When I went round the factory, I was shown a new piece of lacquering gear that put the lacquer on in one thick layer (rather than multiple thin layers). This method was very new (at the time), and it left a seam which could just be felt with the finger nail. If the seam is at quite a sharp angle, then I'm guessing its the same as the lacquered 12" snare I had at the time which was obviously done on this machine.

This method was quick, only needed to be polished to a high gloss (rather than applied, dried, rubbed, applied, dried rubbed ad infinitum) but didn't (IMHO) look at good as the more long winded way of doing it (it looked a bit dull). However, Premier were very proud of this new technology. Sounds to me like these are drums done on this machine.

I'm afraid I cant remember the year but it was when I worked at Wembley Drum Centre so YEARS ago.

If not lacquered directly on the shell, they could be made like my late-model Projectors (round stem on tommount in bass, Yamaha-style legs on bass):

There is an extra ply of veneer, not glued on with the same hard glue as the three "real" plys of the shell, but glued with contact glue - this layer is then lacquered in the Inferno Red. There is a seam, but the lacquer goes over the seam.

This ply is sometimes very easy to take off - a little warming in an oven softens the contact glue completely. I have, however, also encountered a shell were removing it was an absolute hell.

On this one it was easy:

In fact, it was already quite loose, so in order to avoid the head resting on the non-tight seam, I removed the first 2-3 mm at either end of the shell. These were the ones I cut down from Power sizes.

I think it's ply, too, but why leave a gap as if the sheet was too short??
