...or anyone else in the Edinburgh area. Ever heard of a guy called Robin Laing? He's a singer/songwriter/folky/traditional type. He saw me perform at the Edinburgh Festival last week and wants me to contribute to a project he's working on. I don't know anything about him or his work. His website is very flattering, but everyone's website is flattering and doesn't tell me much. I'm waiting for CD's to arrive, but was hoping I could get an unbiased idea of his work. He works out of Edinburgh and thought someone in that area might know of him. Anyone? |

Hi RT.
No the name does not mean anything to me. Can try ask around a bit for you. Some of my fiddle player chums may have knowledge of him.
Was not aware you had been playing in Embra. Would have been good to catch you but this may have caused you anonymity issues... |

Thanks Marty. There's no need to go out your way, I just thought you may have heard the name. I just like to know who I'm dealing with. The festival thing was last minute, literally. I got a phone call on Wedensday evening asking if I could do the show on Thursday evening. Drove down from Mull early on Thursday, did the show, *back to the hotel for groupies, drugs and drink,* then straight back to Mull first thing Friday. It was my old guitar teacher and it was his first Festival with his own material. I wouldn't have done it for anyone else. The anonymity is in the past, that was a Kate Rusby contract thing. I'm a free agent now. My name is Ian Carr, Yorkshire born and Edinburgh bred. Guitar, piano and drums for hire. If you do find anything out you can let me know, but as I said don't go out your way. Thanks again.
* This may not have happened, I may have slept in Tom Clelland's spare room* |

Hello Ian, welcome to the forum, glad to have a name for your name at last! If you ever do get to London again I would welcome a visit so you can try out some of the stuff I make. I have not heard of Robin Laing but hope it works out for you.
Edit: Have you ever thought of playing trumpet and forming the Nucleus of a jazz group? I'll bet you have heard comments like that before. |

Nah, never heard that before Marcus, well not very often. Only about once a day. When the REAL Ian Carr died, I did get a few frantic phone calls from people who only read the headline. I loved Nucleus and saw them perform umpteen times and met the REAL Ian Carr once. He wasn't very friendly to be honest, but he had just come off stage and was totally drained, so I didnt hold it against him. He took trumpet playing to strange places. I'm a bit partial to strange places, musically that is. |

| He was a fine player, and a great band. Strange musical places tend to be the most interesting musical places! |

It's OK Marty, there seems to have been a mix up. Somebody gave me the wrong details. It's nothing to do with Robin Laing. Half a dozen CD's arrived by DHL and they are by a totally different person. A phone call revealed the mix up. I've no idea what's happened, but Iv'e just been contacted by the real person and his dates and mine don't tie up, so after all that it's a non starter. Really grateful for your help and thank fiddly player too.
Ian. |
