A while back I started a thread on discussion asbout drum history - how you got from kit #1 to now.... I thought it might be fun to do the same on cymbals....

1) Awful Meinl Headlinert I think 18" Crash Ride and 15 Super Zyn Hi Hats - I hated them then but would probably love them now

2) Slowly replaced with Paiste 101's as they were all I could afford I thought they were great but soon realised the error of my ways.

3) A brief Sabian Sojourn - AA Reg Hats, AA 16"crash and a HH 16" crash plus a 20" AA medium ride

4) Zildjian K - 13 KZ, 16 and 17 crashes and a 20" Heavy ride augmented with 10" A splash and a 8" K splash

I then gave up playing and sold it all (SOB!)

5) Back!! With Zildjian 13" KZ (recently replaced with some lovely 14" New beats) , 15 and 18 K crashes (love the 18 best crash I've ever owned) and a 20" Scimitar ride that I'm starting to hate less.....oh and a 12" Stagg mini china

Next steps? I want a complete change and this site has convinced me to try Paiste 2002 - they'll really suit the music I play and I've tried some out and I WANT

13" Soundedge hats
17/18" Mediums
22 Heavy Ride
And maybe a 19 or 20" medium too or is that being greedy?
Oh and a 10 or 12" splash - but a loud heavyish one maybe

Now where's a bank to rob??

I've shared - what about you guys?

Gretsch Black Widow mini-mod and a selection of Paiste 2002s
Playing some loud Britpop!!

1/ God-awful Meinl brass things which came with my first kit, and 'SpeedFire' (I think?) hats...hideous.

2/ Paiste 400 hi-hats (loved those), Sabian Solar crash 'n' ride (still hideous).

3/ Paiste throughout, one of the best setups I've had - same 400 hats, 400 ride and PST5 crashes and china.

4/ Went all quiet and acoustic-ish - 12" Zildjian Avedis hats (1950s, apparently), 18" Avedis mini-bell crash/ride (1960s). Great setup, but neither loud nor verastile. Had a 1970s 20" Avedis ride with 'em for a bit, too much .

5/ Taxman comes a-knocking, good cymbals get a-sold; currently using Stagg SH throughout (13" hats, 16" crash, 20" ride) - bought and sold a few to get the ones I've ended up with, but they're VERY good, especially considering the whole lot's cost me about a ton.

Premier, Zildjian, (Stagg), Gibraltar - for hire!

1. Bin lids, no name, no class, no sound awfull (God knows what happened to these)

2. Solars came with my 1st kit (given away to a mates little girl)

3. Zildjian ZXT's, good for starters, slowly fell apart and were gradually replaced with Paiste 802's. (Sold , Destroyed or scrapped)

4. A mixture of paiste 2002's: 15" crash, 16"+18" Meds, RUDE's: 14" hats, 20" power ride, 12" splash, 1000's: 18" china 18" crash and 505's: 16" china. (Still have, gigging set up)

5. A set of Paiste 400's for rehearsals: 14" hats, 12" splash, 2x16" power crash, 18" crash/ride, 20"power ride, very under estimated cymbals (Still have)

6. A set of PST5's: 14" hats, 16"+18" rock crashes, 20" Rock ride for home practice and sometimes rehearsal (Still have)

7. Got my eye on some Dreams now

I worked like a dog of war in a slaughterhouse as a boy yo get my first proper gear, my first pie was a 15" 2002 crash from Mamelok for £65.
Then I bolstered it with a 2000 power ride, 2000 6" and 8" splash, 1000 heavy hi hats, and a 400 power crash. Now I have over seventy paiste cymbals, and I love every one of them like they were me children!

1. Anything I could afford, no brand awareness.

2. Discovered Istanbul in the 90's particularly like the crashes.

3. Hated 2002's

4. Came across a 22" Brilliant Finish K Heavy Zildjian, became MY RIDE.

5. 15" Newbeats Traditional Finish added to setup

6. Now Love 2002's ! ?? kept all above but seem to be playing 18/19/20/24 paistes a lot, have 15 Wild Hats but use 15 Newbeats more.

1.) Some awful Pearl cymbals that came with my first kit.

2.) Upgraded to Sabian Pro/Pro Sonix. 14" Hats, 15" and 17" crashs and a 20" ride. Didn't really like them but much better then the Pearls. I didin't like buying second hand back then.

3.) Slowley replaced with Zildjian Z Customs which I then sold to finance Uni.

4.) Finally finished putting together a set of Sabian AA, AAX and UFIP's. I'm still not happy with Hats/Ride though so I'll have to change these at some point.

Frankenstein s/h set up as a boy containing 11" Kamala hats, Ajax crash, hayman crash ride.
Moved up to s/h A. Zildjians 14" new beats 18" crash ride 20" ride, all pretty old and keyholed, Zanki 18" crash ride and 10" splash
Next Paiste 2002 14" sound edge 13,15 crash, 18" sound creation dark crash, 20" power ride, 18" china, 8" splash. Dark crash split so I bought a 17" crash, 15" split so I got sick of Paiste and flogged them all on ebay along with the Zanki stuff and went back to my old Zildjians, added a 17" crash and a 20" K ride and a 13" constantinople K from the 20s.

Sold everything and started from scratch, Now have Istanbul Agop 14" Mel Lewis hats, 21" Mel lewis ride, 17" dark crash,
Quiet set up for my accoustic band 12" Bosphorus Turk hats (sound superb), 14" Agop china with 4 rivets, 14" Agop trash hit.
Thats it!
no sense of brand loyalty self confessed gear slut

my cymbal history...

First cymbals were Paiste 101 18"crash/ride, Paiste 200 14" hats, Paiste 200 12" splash, Rogers White Hot 16" crash.

Then had a Zildjian Scimitar Bronze 16" crash and 20" ride, with the 200 hats. Then added a 15" Zildjian K thin crash.

Then onto Sabian with 14" AAX hi-hats, 16" and 17" AA medium crashes and an AAX Stage ride

Then it was onto Zildjian again with 16" and 17" A Custom Projection crashes and a 20" K ride
Also had various Paiste Rudes and a Percussion Plus Ufip on the kit in the band's rehearsal space. Had a few other Zildjians, Paistes, Staggs and Sabians in between too.

Managed to get the money to switch back to Paiste (done a full circle now!), and went for 2002s. Haven't looked back since, am now a Paiste artist, and my current set up is:

18" and 19" 2002 crashes
22" 2002 ride
15" 2002 medium hi-hats
8" Signature splash

Plus I have a set of Paiste Dimensions - 14" hats, 16" crash, 18" crash, 20" ride.

Job done.

I hit things

1) Some gongy brass Meinl pies that came with my first 'Thunder' kit.
2) A set of Sabian Pros with my Tama Rockstar DX
3) A variety of cymbal betterment with some AA, AAX, HHX, Signature, Vault, and HH metal from Sabian; I've still got a few of those bits.
4) Some Zildjian A Customs which I regret getting rid of. Got them for a song.
5) Addition of two Dream Bliss crash/rides
6) Addition of Zildjian Remix cymbals; just need the 17" ride now and the set is complete.

It's been a varied road.

Pearl Wild hi-hats & 18" crash (bought with first kit)
Zyn hi-hats (to replace the broken Pearl hats!)
Paiste Alpha 18" crash (to replace broken Pearl crash!)
Paiste Brass-Tones hi hats (to replace broken Zyns!)
Paiste Alpha 20" ride

That setup was played for a good while before I started buying/selling/trying various other cymbals... including...

Zildjian 18" A' crash/ride
Zildjian Amir 20" ride
Sabian 21" AA dry ride
Paiste Giant Beat 18" crash
Paiste Stambul or Dixie hats
Zildjian 10" SR hi-hats
Zildjian 12" SR hi-hats
Zildjian A' china boy low
Zildjian A' china boy high
Zildjian A' 10" splash
Various other Zyns, 5 star Zyns etc.

And now have settled on the following setup:

Zildjian 14 New beat hi-hats
Zildjian A' 16" med crash
Zildjian A' 18" thin crash
Zildjian A' 20" rock ride

(very happy with those, would like to just add one more, maybe a dark-sounding 19" crash, or crash/ride... and maybe another pair or SR hats... and maybe... )

1) Stagg 14" hi hats and 16" crash that came free with the kit - God awful;

2) Paiste PST3 Ride - Liked it at the time

3) Stagg SH 8" splash - Still love it (first cymbal my lovely wife bought me)

4) PST3 16" crash, 10" splash and 18" China - Hated them all. I actually bought another 10" splash to try and make mini hats but they sounded so poor!;

5) 22" Sabian HH Manhatten Jazz - I was so amazed by how much better it was than the PST3. I fell in love and still adore this cymbal;

6) 20" Sabian HHX Ozone Ride, 12" Ozone AAX Splash and 6" AAX splash.

7) Zildian K 16" Medium Crash - HATE it (and need to actually get my ass in gear and sell it).

8) FINALLY replaced the Stagg Hi Hats (can't believe I held onto them for this long...you should see how mishapen they became) with a set of 14" Sabian HH Sizzle hats.

9) Sabian 18" HH Dark Crash and 16" Sabian El Sabor Picante Hand Crash.

10) Happy!

1. Session Pro (came with my first kit). These were mangled and bent within minutes. Hi hats were cracked and had bits falling off them within a week. Oh for some lessons...
2. Paiste 101's. Horribly brassy.
3. Sabian Pro Sonix 20" Ride. Had this for a couple of years unti last week when I replaced it with a ZHT 20" Rock Ride.
4. Swapping and changing crashes all the time, whatever's cheap on ebay... 16" ZXT medium thin, a couple of Stagg 17" + 18" crashes, a Zyn 20" Ride (that sounded more like a crash), had a couple of Meinl MCS'. Just got some Alchemy ART hats for £20, bit of a bargain. And an 18" Meinl Classics china.

I've only had all this cr@p because I have not yet managed to save enough cash to get anything particulary good. Would love to get some Z Customs. But I am constantly on the tightest of budgets, and I am incapable of saving.

My first kit had a set of Kashian cymbals in conventional 14/16/18/20 sizes to which I added an A Zildjian 18" crash/ ride (because I fancied a "name" cymbal and it was cheap) and some kind of Meinl 14" crash (because I was young and wanted to emulate some or other hero's set up). These were all stolen and I basically gave up playing (about 20 odd years ago).

Returning to the throne 15 years later I had a brief dalliance with some hand-me-down rubbish (absolute starter kit nonsense) before getting a set of Sabian Pro Sonix. A 16" Z Custom Rock Crash was a pretty brief addition on account of it sounding horrible and I then went on a bit of a cymbal buying frenzy for the next couple of years. If I remember rightly this included:
18" AA crash; 17 and 19" AAXPlosion crashes; AAX hats which I later flogged and bought AA Regular hats; 21" AAX ride. 20" Paiste Sound Formula Power ride (should have kept that one); 14" SF crash. I tended to mix and match from this lot depending on whatever whim I had and then went a bit UFIP crazy and bought 14" Bionic hats; 16/17/18/19 Bionic crashes used in either the odd or even sized pair (the evens were relatively mellow while the odds were beautifully obnoxious for some reason). A 20" Experience ride (selling this was my single greatest drum related mistake. It was glorious!) and a 12" Bionic splash which is the only one of the above list that I still have.
Gradually these were all sold on and the proceeds went into a set of 2002s (and a bit of credit card reduction) that I've been playing for 3 or 4 years now. I could have saved an absolute fortune had I discovered 2002s earlier! I don't intend ever getting rid of these but do now find myself needing something more mellow for a band I'm playing with just now and don't really know where to go. If the above experience has taught me one thing it is to take my time and spend my money on well thought out stuff rather than simply blanket bombing anything cheap that comes up on ebay "just in case".

Went something like this:

Very first kit was a loaner I had for a few months with some 5stars on it (not a bad start)

Then first kit I owned had no name "brass" cymbals from Grant music, where I later worked. They were very cheap and utter, utter rubbish. The hats were so soft that I kind of mashed them in to rough china shaped cymbals just through playing.

My first decent cymbals were Zildjian, New Beat hats, followed by a medium ride.

Later added some UFIP Ritmo crashes and a china.

Various others came and went:

Rude Ride/Crash, Earth Ride (which stayed for quite a long time) UFIP Ritmo splash and hats,Sabian AA 22" china. Sabian 13" Fusion Hats. 20" K custom ride, various A and K crashes, K custom splash. Istanbul 20" ride.

Now I am with UFIP Natural (heavy) 14" hats and 21" Ride, old 18" A medium crash, 90's K 16" dark crash and Istanbul 10" Hats on me jungle kit.

Next will be more UFIP...

The first cymbals i has were badly shaped Zyn's and from what i can remember pretty awful.

As the years went on I had Tosco Hi-Hats and Pearl Wild Ride and Crashes which were not too bad.

After a long break away a set of Magic Hi-Hats were quickly changed for a set of Zanki's and there were some Zanki Crashes,Paiste 400 Crashes, Paiste 1000 Ride and a Paiste Alpha Ride.. Slowly moved on to Sabian AA and a few HH Crashes.

There have been many cymbals that came with second hand kits over the years but most were sold on again and Zildjian just didn't ever do it for me for some reason.

After many changes and swaps etc Paiste 505's and 2002's were the main set up however over the last 6 or so years the Italian bug has bitten and i have eventually replaced everything to Ufip Class series with the odd Extatic series. Wouldn't mind a 17 inch Class Light but that might have to wait a while.

Looking back the Italians were always in the mix going back with the Tosco's and Zanki's but to my ears Ufip cymbals are the best and i doubt i will change again. It doesn't stop me playing anything i find in shops from all manufacturers though just in case!

Resonators and Ufips....just beautiful. www.vintageolympic.co.uk

Rotocasting is definitely the pinnacle of cymbal manufacture!

meinl and zyns to start, added a really cheap ufip heavy ride

then gradually added 15 aax dark crash,k 20 pre aged dry light ride, 13 k/z hats, 400's hats and a vintage AA18'crash(old hollow stamp on the underside)

then recently added a 16 hhx stage crash, 18 aaxplosion, 18 stage crash and 14 ufip natural hats,

along the way picked up various splashes(cheap and expensive, realised i don't like splashes) a couple of big ol'Chinas and stagg lion chinas, loads of broken stackable cymbals and a few gongs

In 1988 started with old Zyn or super Zyns.
Then brought Paiste 101 hats, crash and crash/ride.
By early 90's got my first Zildjian hats, 12" SR from John Shearer's Talking Drums.
Owned some Platinum Zildjians, used Avedis crashes and Ping ride.
Then spent early noughties with A customs (crashes, splashes and china), still using the 12"SR hats on an X hat.
I've spent the last 2-3 changing between Zildjian (love those orientals) and Sabian. Spent a smegging fortune and now have;
14" HHX stage hats
13" AAX stage hats
22" HH rock ride
17" + 19" HHX extreme crashes
18" HHXplosion crash
18" HHX China
10" AAX splash
Currently looking for max stax/chopper type cymbals if for no other reason than spending more money on something I'm likely to sell at a loss on ebay a couple of months later.

Started out with those lovely metal?? discs that come with no-name started kits. Which were quickly replaced with a ZBT set.

I then began to look into "decent" cymabls. I went in to get a crash, ended up walkling out with some new hi hats and a crash! However, bad times; I bought 14" A mastersound hihats and think they're the best hats I've used. I SHOULD have bought the 20" paragon crash the dude tried to get me to buy, but instead bought a 19" Z Custom Crash which I loved for a month because it was LOUD and it said "Zildjian"!?

From there I went on t'ebay and got myself some 18" K Dark Crashes, Thin and Med. thin (after buying one I had to get another to replace the Z Custom as it was too harsh)

I then got a 21" Sweet ride to replace the ZBT ride, which as it was, wasn't "that" bad. But I loved that too. I also picked up an 18" Oriental China trash new and still use that today. Lovely cymbal. I then made ANOTHER mistake by selling the 14" mastersounds and replacing them with the A custom mastersounds, which are lovely, but not as nice when played open. got them off ebay and they cracked VERY quickly(convinced it wasn't me!?). SO I bought the same again brand new.

I for some reason changed the 21" Sweet ride for a 22" A custom ride and beat that until it cracked (oh the joys of being young!). I ended up selling that on ebay and replacing it with a 21" Sweet Ride brilliant finish, not as nice as the trad.

In between all of this I have changed crashes, I had an 17" A Custom and sold that for the 18". I bought another 18" a custom crash in a different weight and also bought an 18" a custom efx crash which gathers dust. I also have bought a 20" a crash in brilliant finish and I love that but dont use it, I also bought a 19" K Hybrid Crash but sold that. I also have 10" A Custom splash (ok) and 10" K splash(amazing!) which I've used as aux hats and splashes but now gather dust...

Currently I'm angry because I have cracked my ride :( I'm gutted as I've got to shell out for mot, tax, service and a new tyre for the car this month. And I can't afford to do anything because we're moving out :'(

So now I'm stuck with a cracked ride, which I thought I'd lowered my cymbals to standard height and improved my technique to prevent! I don't know what to do now!

But currently I have

14" A Custom Mastersound hihats
18" A Custom Crash
18" A Custom Rezo Crash
18" Oriental China
21" A Sweet Ride (Brilliant) Cracked :(

Not on the kit

10" A Custom Splash
10" K splash
20" A Crash (brilliant)
18" A Custom Crash EFX

I have made some major mistakes! And thats as honest I could be.

I started off with a beginners kit which came with 14" Vibra hi hats (not bad sounding but not very loud), a Toscano 16" crash and 20" Sabian B8.

Realised that I could end up spending a fortune on cymbals and cymbal upgrades over time, so decided to buy the best cymbals I could find (that were my own personal taste) bit by bit, so that I wouldn't have to change them continuously.

Ended up spending 3 weekends finding as many cymbals as I could to try out in stores along the south coast. It was a good exercise and I liked many. Some Sabian AAX, various Paiste and Zildjian, Istanbul etc.

Tough, tough decision, but opted for a 16" and 18" Paiste Signature full crashes in 1995. Got a massive discount! Then when I had the money went back for 14" Signature Heavy Hi Hats. Finally I ended up with a 20" Signature Power Ride - very interesting cymbal but I have now replaced with a Signature 20" Dark Crash Ride, which is awesome (never seen one before until I stumbled across it).

Don't think I'm a cymbal snob though - I love Zildjians and Sabians and so forth. Some great cymbals out there, but just wanted consistent sound for recording and cymbals loud enough for live work. The Paiste brand gave me that. I found the same Zildjian cymbals could vary in sound, so care needed in selection. This was 16 years ago though.

If shopping in bulk, you can get some awesome discounts.

1) Sabian Solar set of 20" Ride, 16" "crash" but was more akin to a Fray Bentos pie dish and a pair of 14" hats. The crash met an unseemly end one drunken evening out of my upstairs window.
Note: 14" crashes do not good frisbees make.

2) Replaced the dead crash with Paiste Innovations thin 16 & 18" crashes. Lovely, lovely cymbals.

3) Replaced the hihats with again Innovations but medium hats (14") OK, not t greatest hats available bu Julian done me right!

4) Replaced the ride with a 20" Red Coloursound one. Wasn't over keen so bought a 502 (I think) ride which again I wasn't keen on. I found a bargain Sound Formula Reflector Power Ride (20") and loved it. I've just replaced that with a Dream Bliss 22" ride cos I wanted more wash than the Paiste was capable of unless battered hard.

5) Replaced the 2 Innovations crashes with Signature medium 16" and 18" models. What can you say about these?! They're simply brilliant.

6) Replaced the Innovations Hi-hats with Dream Contact 14" hihats. These Dream cymbals are incredible value and they sound phenomenal....

I also had a Paiste 802 splash but never used it so I flogged that for a profit 4 years down the line from buying it!! Gotta love eBay!

Too many to mention ...Paist Signitures,Rudes to Zildjians and Ufips ....I crack most of them but I do have a 22" K Ride that was hand picked out of 400 Zildjians by Brookie.
Paul was recording Chemical Beats when he went to Zildjian to pick the cymbals for the session ....I have had it for 20 years and it's great.

1 - Zyns that came with my first kit, a Beverley. They died a quick and horrible death.

2 - Mix of second hand Pearl and Paiste 101s that also died soon after.

3 - Full set of the first Zildjian Scimitar Bronze cymbals that came out in the early 90s. I was suckered in by that damn badge.

4 - Added a Zildjian China Boy High. My first ever pro cymbal!

5 - Added Sabian B8 pro splash and china splash. Hmmm, those Sabins sound nicer than Zildjian! Sacrilege!

6 - My first full set of brand new cymbals. Sabian AAX Stage crashes and ride, AAX china and AAX Fusion hats. My love affair with Sabian begins.

7 - After 12 years solid use, I loan my cymbals to a friend for a charity gig. The crashes come back cracked, the china buckled. Never again.

8 - Buy a full new setup. HH Fusion hats and HH RBDR, AAX China, AA Metal-X crashes, A Custom splash and Wuhan mini chinese. Couldn't get the last two from the Sabian range to suit the sounds in my head.

9 - Replace the AA Metal-Xs with AAXplosion crashes after three years. Am now perfectly happy with my setup!

Started off with Zilco's then Zildjians (15, 16, 18's & 20), moved into Sabian HH but never really got into them - have always lusted for Paiste and currently have Paiste Signatures which are truly musical - also have a few RUDES (thin crashes and 24" Ride/Crash) and 2002's (splashes).

Pearl cymbals.... on a mapex kit :)

then a full compliment of Sabian HHX's

added a few staggs.

discovered Istanbul agop. replaced hhx's in the order of the things I most disliked about them, Crash - Ride - hats.

liked the dark jazzy vibe but needed more cut and umph.

unconciously started playing more and more zildjians.

got a matt nolan ride.

saw a guy playing some of 'the best' Hihats I ever heard. turned out to be ZBT's. realise player = 90% of sound. Realise I still have so much to learn, simplify to my small hihats and searching for a good crash ride, a tricky position where I am searching for a sound I have only heard in a few cracked up 20/22" K's.

stop worrying about gear.

start lusting over recording gear.

I played Zildjians of various types for 43 years! BUT....this year I made a leap of faith and changed to Paiste 2002's, I have to say that I have found them to be probably the most versatile cymbals I have ever owned.

In the early eighties on my first kit I had a 16" zyn crash and an unbranded 60s pair of trashy hats and a dustbin lid sounding ride with dents all over the bell. By 85/86 I was the proud owner of a set of Zildjian Scimitars, at gigs I used to put extra tilt on them so people could see the Zildjian logos ha ha.
These were upgraded one by one to Sabian pro hats, Paiste 2002 crash, Sabian ride. So here I am with a variation of the three big cymbal makers.
Finally I sold everything I had and bought my new kit, cases, hardware and a full set of cymbals all brand new. I chose Zildjian A customs all round 10" & 12" splashes, 14" 16" & 18" crashes, 13" projection hats, 20" ping ride, 20" china and finally my favourite a Zildjian armrand 19" ride, this has armrand's signature etched into it also with the words "beautiful baby" and has 3 rivets. Excelent as a ride or a crash!! I think having a mixture of cymbals helps you to decide what to go for later on in life. I have had these for about seven years now and they have never let me down. I also like the history of Zildjian likewise with Gretsch and all of my gear is modern with vintage roots, over all a lovely combination!

Sure I've done this before on here, but mercifully, it's short........

- Around 1980, started with bin lids on borrowed kits

- 11 year break (doh!)

- Around mid-90s, bin lids on my Prem kit; so awful I've chosen to forget what they were.

- Around 10 years ago bought a K 18" crash/ride s/h in South Africa for a bargain price. Realised what decent cymbals are all about, but was skint.

- Around 8 years ago bought the following brand new:
Zild. A 14" New Beat hats
Zild. K 17" Dark Crash Medium Thin
Zild. K 21" Heavy Ride

Still jusing them along with the K 18" carch/ride, and loving them. Unlikely to change anytime soon.

10" Sabian HH Splash (2005 - 2005)

First setup (ca. 1980):

Paiste 505 14" hat, 16" Crash and a 18" Crash ride. Soon after a 16" Tosco crash and a 22" Zanki ride was added.

Used for some years, until friends used the crashes mounted directly onto microphone stands....dead!

Next setup (ca. 1982):

Paiste 602 15" Hihat and Zildjian A 16 and 18" Thin crashes and a 20" Zanki ride. Hihat a little too loud, otherwise nice.

Used that for 20 years, added a 20" Zanki Swish and a Paiste 10" Splash around the millenium.

THEN things took off - courtesy the internet, trommeslageren.dk and the possibility to swap, buy cheaply and sell again if not liked. Since then I have owned around 70 cymbals, keeps 20.

Current setup at home, in the "Studio":

Zanki thin crash 14 over Paiste 602 Sound Edge bottom, 8 & 10" Turkish splashes, a 10" Meinl Generation X Filter China, 12, 16, 17 and 18" Sabian HHX Evo“s, a 22" Paiste 602 thin ride and the 20" Zanki Swish. All of them very thin cymbals, very lively and ones that open without you have to thrash the life out of them.

Pic:

http://www.gratisimage.dk/image-8D3B_4E257C82.jpg

Filter China and 18" HHX only partly visible, It might seem crowded, but though I am tall and the drums small, they all afll readily to hand, so to say.

Playing stand-up rockabilly as I also do, I only have one cymbal - either and old and very wobbly 18" Paiste 2002 crash or my old Zildjian A 18" thin crash. There“s a lot more volume in the A, I don“t know whats has happened to the 2002, it is very "dead" and soft. Practical for low volume settings.

Jon

I TRY to tell myself I already have what I want.....

1) CB starter cymbals - still got them in a cupboard somewhere at my dad's.

2) Set of Sabian Solars - I was convinced they were as good as it got.

3) Sabian AA Rock set, augmented by a 18 AAXplosion crash, then an AAX effects pack.

4) Sabian 14" HHX groove hats, 21" Fierce Ride, 16 Paragon Crash and briefly a 20" Legacy ozone ride.

5) - current set. For gigging/general use I've got Istanbul OM 15 hats, 16 crash, 20 crash and 22 ride.
Then for the lighter/atmospheric folk stuff I do - Istanbul 30th Anniversary 14 hats, Agop Signature 18 crash, 24 Turk jazz ride and a 23 Matt Chamberlain Ride.

Love my Istanbuls.

Here's some cymbal history, last week I visited my old rehearsal rooms to do some overdubs on a friends recording "project".

I haven't been there since 1994 - MY BEATEN UP OLD PAISTE 101 WAS STILL IN THE ROOM!

It's one of the original ones, like a silvery alloy, not like todays brass ones.

I seem to recall paying 7 or 8 quid for it from a dude in high school back in the mid 1980's....
