Hi all....nobody ever here...so I thought I'd start a thread about Cajon.
Does anyone use one?
I bought one very recently from here: http://www.cajondrums.co.uk/
Lion Cajon
All's going very well. They've been enormously helpful. I've played the machine, and the sounds is amazing. I can't wait to get the drum in my hands.
Would any of you like to comment? |

| I sometimes play the cajon for small acoustic gigs. I have a jingle stick attached to the side of mine, that can be used a replacement for the hi-hat when playing drum kit style rhythms. |

I own a Schlagwerk Cajon 2inOne. And made several cajons myself. Well, actually it was a wooden box to store microscopes in and I modified it to 'act' like a cajon. |
Bigger is not allways better....Mostly it is :o) http://www.auditmypc.com/freescan/antispam.html |

I was given a rather lovely Meinl cajon yesterday, so I think I'll be scouring YouTube to find out how to play the thing!
Ideas/recommendations welcome...! |

I might try fitting a Piezo in mine tomorrow if I have time, but I seriously doubt that it would be anywhere near usefully good!
I have used my PZMs with great results, they pick up a very wide range of frequencies so all your boom and slap will be picked up nicely, and being fairly flat they take up minimal "acoustic space" inside a Cajon. PZMs are also known as Boundary (Effect) Mics. |

Just put my old £20 flat plate Tandy/Realistic pressure Zone Microphone inside my Cajon/Bass Drum and put into my Alligator Ebony Drum amp, and as I expected it's superb. That model is no longer produced, but they may still sell the newer model in USA, but you have to get to a BIG Tandy because the small ones don't stock them and deny their existence. I think Audio Technica and Sure make them and not too expensive, but not sure of any model numbers. I do know that <<ahem>> Thomann (typed in a quiet whisper) sell one. |

| That's the one, looks like the later Tandy/Realistic model. 30 Hz to 16,000 is the perfect range for a cajon, plenty of bass end! For studio mic'ing you can place it on floor, wall or ceiling (velcro or clips) the bigger the flat surface the mic sits on, the better it performs. For live use you should find that if it is inside the cajon you will be able to back off the volume on the PA and achieve a reasonable degree of separation. If you buy one, let us know how you get on! |

I've been playing cajon for a number of years now.
I mainly use the DG Chanela but also have a matching Kongo which I use as a Bass Cajon. It's mostly folk music that I play it with (it's great for going to sessions since you'll definitely get a seat!) but have also used it with Cuban/Salsa bands.
I tried a piezo-electric pick-up but it just didn't cut it for me... If you have plenty space, a bass drum mic & a condenser just outside the sound hole work perfectly! Otherwise I use a clip on AKG condenser but I'm certainly going to try a boundary mic now! |

If I ever get the chance (and money...) I'd definitely go for a Woodskin cajon http://woodskin.com/
This guy in Australia has some amazing ideas! I played one of his cajons a while back and there are just amazing! The top model has two pedals which are connected to two beaters inside the drum (one low, one high) plus different tone & volume controls thanks to some dampening & a wee door on the sound hole!
Incredible stuff! Check him out! |

| I have just bought a rather nice cajon made by a AJ Smith? It seems a really nice bit of kit, but never heard of AJ Smith Cajons. Can anybody shed any light? |
They've done studies you know. 60% of the time, Leggomen sound good every time. |

| I would never play a cajon. Too trendy. I use a cocktail drum for busking or coffeehouse gigs and it's higher on the cool factor. |

Hi Newbie here, discovering this site yesterday searching for an amplification solution for my Pratley Pro cajon, whose internals are broken. So my apologies for the late reply but this is the only relevant thread I have found. I am interested in the realistic PZM but cannot find a real-life one to measure nor find the specs online. I am limited by the size of the hole on the side of my cajon for any installation [around 110 mm]. Can someone enlighten me on the dimensions of the PZM plate? |
