Cool. As an aside, here's a question for everyone... I think the door looks a little unbalanced with only two circular windows and am thinking of putting a third one further down. Anyone agree or am I at risk of over-thinking this?

Next thing you'll be fitting speakers in the portholes!

I'm actually a 3 port person. I'm not saying the 2 holes do not look right but I'm just on the "3" side of the fence. To me it feels like 1 is missing if that makes sense and it would always nag me ha ha. Or it would have to be 1.

Apparently the 1 & 3 as opposed to 2 is a well know psychoanalysis grouping trait type thingamebob !

The 3 is a strong compulsion: beginning, middle, end, base, column, pediment, left, centre, right, and in the case of portholes: First Class Cabin Class, Steerage.

Where would you put the 3rd though, if equally spaced there is no room for one above the existing ones, if below it will perhaps be very low on the door and look a bit odd, like a door in a primary school. It could be a smaller hole and have a tweeter in it!

So we've opened up the cable trays and the painful work has begun:

Some cool stuff also started to happen...

Someone much cleverer with photoshop than me sent me a suggestion for the control room doors. Wha'd'ya think?

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/funkydoor.png

(looks pretty damn funky to me... though I suspect my carpenter might finally kill me if I was to suggest it)

Cabling is NOT fun!

I love the portholes, much funkier than 3 in a line. Sorry, carpenter, but: GET ON WITH IT!!! (© Python, Holy Grail)

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. Am gonna ponder this one awhile!

In the meantime, we've been doing some flooring. Here's the booth:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/DSCN7883.jpg

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/DSCN7886.jpg

There have been a fair few of the maple flooring boards that are pretty heavily figured either with knots or where they have been sawn close to the bark. Rather than waste them I decided just to put them in the machine room:

So someone messaged me suggesting that instead of the lower window being a perfect circle I have it routered into the shape of my logo. I LOVE this idea (though my carpenter really will kill me)! thoughts?

The mystery photoshop genius just sent me this:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/Logowindow.jpg

I was thinking more like having the logo the same size as the other windows, and maybe as the middle one of the three.

That logo window looks superb to me. Your crapentaker (© Pere Ubu) might have a challenge, but not as much as the glazier! You might have to get it done in Perspex, unless you have the wood shpae fitted OVER the glass, rather than the glass cut to that shape. If you do find you need to use perspex Hamar Acrylics in East London have a skilled fabrication service. Good idea to select the timber 2nds for out-of-sight areas.

Thanks guys. I think the trick is pribably to put a glass window in as normal and bond the centre piece to the glass.

@ Stakka - love that! I'm definitely gonna nick the idea!

So some of you may have noticed there haven't actually been many new pictures of late. About 10 days ago a label I do a significant amount of work for told me that had been holding off waiting for me to re-open but the situation had become urgent and they had some stuff that just couldn't wait any longer. In particular they had a charity record that had to be turned around super quick. Queue much scrambling around trying to get the place into a workable situation asap. What followed were some of the most stressful sessions I've had to do in some considerable time (patch bays weren't in so I was hotplugging mic-lines and cables on an ad hoc basis hoping I'd labelled them properly). I'll put up some pics from the session when I get a minute to sort through them. The good news though, is that we got through it and the client is happy. This week though, it's back to the job at hand. Here's a few shots of the desk which is now close to its final resting place. From one side:

from the other:

Gear photos !! Yum yum.

Having come in to this recording stuff late in the day Trev and only really being reared on Protools , basic audio interfaces and small live mixers - that desk looks a mighty fine beast but are there any special aspects of it that are specific to your more dedicated line of drum recording, or are they all pretty much of a muchness ?

API has long been known as the console of choice for recording drums. The API is known to be fast and mid-forward and distorts very nicely if its pushed really hard but also has lots of clean headroom. There are only three in the UK.

So I thought someone might be interested in the lengths we went to in order to try and soundproof the studio doors.

First take a 1 hour fire door blank, router out a rebate to perfectly fit a random piece of glass you had ordered in the wrong size for the booth window (ahem...):

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/DSCN7853.jpg

bond a layer of limp mass membrane to either side of the door then take two sheets of maple laminated mdf and router windows (using a pre-prepared template):

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/DSCN7857.jpg

and then stick the lot together before fitting it in the custom machined frame:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/DSCN7863.jpg

Do you foresee an issues between the plastering and the woodworks ie it's usually advisable to leave a good time between due to the amount of water that's released during the plaster drying, as it causes the wood to swell (unsealed or partially sealed wood anyway). Do you have a dehumidifier?

So after many weeks of waiting the area of the main live room that was changed finally got re-plastered:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/DSCN7997.jpg

and the plaster dried:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/DSCN8007.jpg

This allowed us to paint the wall and finalise the new floor...

And finally.. here are some pictures of the, almost finished, live room. I tried to capture the width of the room with the first shot (difficult due to the humungous old live room window still sitting in the room!):

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/DSCN8013.jpg

I tried to get the length of the room in this one:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/DSCN8024.jpg

And this one is looking from one side wall to the other:

Sounds like a plan!

Two types of light for your delectation today. First a shot of the wall lights I settled on for the corridor:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/DSCN8055.jpg

Continuing the circular theme, the second is a first picture of the sky-light which is appearing above the soundlock:

The 'white room' got a door frame:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/DSCN8056.jpg

a solid core door sandwiched with limp mass membrane and mdf:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/DSCN8057.jpg

and eventually, a door:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/DSCN8059.jpg

(But not handles, obv...). Anyway, here's a cross section:

Here's the formwork for the new gear ramps which we are putting into the building. On a practical level they mean that all studios in the building can be reached without lifting gear up steps. What's more it means the whole place complies with disabled access requirements. We've used polystyrene for the formwork so that it can be scraped out once the concrete has gone off, thereby maintaining the isolation between all rooms:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g28/Rimskidog/ED996A12-AE46-4D7C-BA1F-37149F8CFB91-6492-0000089B4A0C67EC.jpg

Here's the concrete going in:

and here's how it looks now:
